Can I be honest for a minute?

I enjoyedddd my summer! 🤭

I spent time with my family and played in the mountains and let myself breathe a little...

And I basically said I’d circle back this fall to move locations and organize my new office!

Welp, it’s almost fall! 🍂

So, here’s the checklist I’m personally following to reset + refresh my business in September (and guess what, it’s coincidentally perfect for your business too!).

One of the top reasons I get told for why someone left their old accountant?

Communication. 🫢

Taxes are one of the biggest expenses of your life; you shouldn’t have to be chasing your accountant down for answers!

The last place you want to be is Googling “accountant for small businesses” next April...

Instead, here’s what to do this September to jump-start your accountant search:

→ Ask other small businesses you trust for 2-3 recommendations + start your interview list.

→ Set up intro calls to discuss your tax needs + expectations (don’t forget to ask about communication, tax planning, IRS support, etc.)

→ Start your handoff folder with at least 2-3 of your most recent tax returns, schedules, and any other records your new accountant will need.

If you’re already sure you want a new accountant next tax season, September is the time to make your move! 📆

Listen, if I ever quit doing my own taxes, here’s exactly what I’d be looking for in a new accountant as someone with incrediblyyyy high standards ↓

→ someone with experience in my industry (preferably with referrals from my peers)

→ a clear communication policy (I would HATE to feel left in the dark about the status of my return)

→ credentials for the level of support I want

→ availability outside of tax season + support on IRS/state notices

→ services that go deeper than just tax preparation + filing (tell me how to get ~strategic~ with my tax bill)

But for now, the great news is I do alllll that for clients like you! 🫵

The “best” college savings account for your child depends on what you actually want to do with that money...

Do you want total control over the funds? Are you cool with only getting the tax benefits if you spend it on qualifying education expenses?

What if your child decides to go a totally different route?

Factoring in the tax advantages, flexibility, and control of those funds is important in your decision to save for your child’s future.

In honor of September being National Disaster Preparedness Month, I want to talk about how tax deadlines can be pushed back due to certain disasters.

It’s not something you really think about until it happens to you, but when you’re in the midst of an emergency, taxes are the last thing on your mind.

To check if your return deadlines are affected, go to the IRS Tax Relief in Disaster Situations page and search for your state + disaster.

Make sure your local county, parish, or Tribal area is on the list (living in the same state as a disaster isn’t necessarily enough).

Double-check the covered period to confirm which deadlines have been moved and when they’ve been postponed until.

And one more thing, SAVE this post, because the lasttt thing you’ll have during a disaster is the bandwidth to worry about your taxes!
