You don't have to just accept whatever the IRS says.

One of the ten Taxpayer Bill of Rights is the right to challenge the IRS's position and be heard, and it's one of the most overlooked.

Here's what that actually means for you:

β†’ If the IRS flags a math or clerical error, you get 60 days to tell them you disagree (and submit records to back it up).

β†’ If they propose a tax adjustment you don't agree with, you can challenge it in U.S. Tax Court before paying, but you only have 90 days from the date of the notice to file your petition (150 days if you're outside the U.S.).

β†’ Before the IRS can levy your bank account, seize property, or file a federal tax lien, you're often entitled to a hearing with the Independent Office of Appeals first.

The hard part isn't the right, it's the deadline. These windows are short, and they don't reset.

If you've gotten a notice and you're not sure whether to fight it or how much time you have, don't sit on it.

An unopened IRS notice keeps running its clock whether you read it or not. Penalties and interest don't pause out of politeness. And some letters start deadlines that, once missed, take away rights you can't get back, like the 30-day window to request a hearing before a levy.

But almost every IRS problem is more fixable the earlier you deal with it. The envelope on your counter is not the enemy. The silence after it is.
Open it. Read it. Then call someone who reads these for a living.

Today’s Q2 estimated tax deadline, and if you’re staring at a number you can’t actually pay, read this before you panic.

Paying something still helps.
If you're short on an estimated payment, the IRS charges interest on the shortfall, currently 6% annually, compounding daily, and rising to 7% on July 1. A partial payment reduces both the amount it's charged on and how long it accrues.

Paying less is better than paying nothing. Pay what you can today. Then figure out the rest, the IRS has real options for people who are short, and none of them start with ignoring the bill.

The October 15 deadline is coming up, but waiting usually costs more, not less.

Here are your free options:
🟒 IRS Free File: free guided software if your 2025 income was $89,000 or less
🟒 Free File Fillable Forms: free for any income level
🟒 MilTax: free federal + 5 state returns for the military community
🟒 Commercial e-file: catches simple errors before they hold up your refund

And if you're in a federally declared disaster area, extra time is granted automatically, no call needed.

Quick heads-up if you pay quarterly: your Q2 estimated payment is due Monday, June 15.
-
This one trips people up every year because it only covers two months of income, April and May, even though it's called a "quarter." It's easy to forget when you just paid in April.
-
You can pay free at IRS Direct Pay (no account needed). If your income jumped this year, the safe-harbor rule is your friend: pay at least 100% of last year's tax (110% if your 2025 income was over $150k), and you generally avoid an underpayment penalty even if you owe more at filing.
-
Mark it. Pay it. Move on with your weekend.

Nobody plans to lose everything in a disaster. But the people who recover fastest are the ones who prepared before it happened.

The financial side of disaster prep is something most people completely overlook, and it can cost thousands in missed insurance claims, lost records, and tax benefits you didn't know you qualified for.

Swipe through for a simple checklist of steps you can take right now. ➑️

A few things that surprised us:

βœ” If you live in a federally declared disaster area, the IRS automatically postpones your filing deadlines, you don't have to ask
βœ” The IRS has a free room-by-room home inventory workbook to help you document your belongings
βœ” There's a dedicated IRS hotline just for disaster-related tax questions: 866-562-5227

Hurricane season is already here. Wildfires, floods, and severe storms don't wait either.

Thinking about starting a business? The structure you choose on day one affects your taxes for years. 🏒

Most new entrepreneurs focus on the exciting stuff, the name, the logo, the launch. But the tax fundamentals you set up early (or skip) can cost you thousands later.

Here's your 6-step tax setup checklist:

βœ” Choose the right business structure (sole prop, LLC, S-corp, partnership)
βœ” Pick your tax year
βœ” Get your EIN: it's free and takes minutes at IRS.gov
βœ” Collect Form I-9 and W-4 from every employee
βœ” Understand which taxes you owe and when
βœ” Check your state's specific requirements too

And if you already have a business that's fallen behind on taxes or received IRS notices, the earlier you act, the more options you have. Our free training shows you exactly what to do:

You started it because you loved it. Then people started paying you for it. Now you're wondering if the IRS cares.

Spoiler: they do. ⚠️

The difference between a hobby and a business isn't just a label, it affects what you can deduct, what you owe, and what happens if the IRS takes a closer look.

There's a clear framework for figuring out which side you're on. The IRS looks at 8 specific factors, things like whether you're keeping records, whether you're adjusting operations to improve profit, and whether you actually depend on the income.

Swipe through for the full breakdown. ➑️

One thing that applies no matter what: if you're getting paid through Venmo, PayPal, Cash App, or in crypto, the IRS is receiving a report of those transactions. That income needs to be reported either way.

If any of this has you thinking about your own tax situation, our free training is a great place to start:
