Did you owe a lot of tax for 2025? Were you penalized for not making quarterly payments?

If you can answer “yes” to both, then you may qualify for an automatic refund of a portion of your 2025 tax bill with no action required. The IRS is proactively recalculating their “estimated tax underpayment penalty” based on last year’s deadline postponement until November 3. We have seen refunds of about 50% of the penalty that was paid. If you receive a letter from the IRS in the next few weeks about this and have questions, feel free to reach out to us for help!

The IRS is continuing to move away from accepting paper checks for tax payments or issuing refunds by mail.

If you file a return without banking information, the IRS will send a notice requesting it—this can delay your refund and require follow-up before it’s released.

💡 To receive your refund as quickly as possible, we recommend setting up a bank account now.
💻 If you expect to owe, consider having your payment drafted from a bank account or made online through IRS Direct Pay.
