Consider this, my fellow accounting professionals: You—yes, you!—play an essential role in addressing climate change. How so? As the owner of a small business, you have the ability to invite your clients to look beyond the bottom line, to put people before profit, and to prioritize the Earth. But doing so requires you to be a different kind of accountant—one that breaks the stereotype that we’re just a bunch of bean-counting, number crunchers.

Instead, I invite you to step into your role as a strategic advisor, asking a different set of questions, measuring environmental impact, and holding CEOs accountable to a different set of standards. What are you doing to live a more carbon-neutral life, and moreover, how are you working hand in hand with your clients to do the same?
