Many people tend to ignore their finances. In fact, it is so common it has an actual term: “financial avoidance.” It is the financial equivalent of sticking your head in the sand, and we all do it. Memorial Day is meant to be something more than the start of summer. It’s a day to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Our freedom to build a career and raise a family in the best country in the world was afforded to us by these men and women. Their stories may not be known to us personally, but their impact shows up in our lives every single day.

It’s a time to fire up the grill and spend time with family and friends. The end of the school year has either arrived already or...

There are thousands of articles about compounding in investing. We've written our fair share. While a lot of topics in investing gets overblown, compounding is one of the few things that is underappreciated. Our brains think in straight lines, so exponential growth is hard to picture.

“Know what you own and why you own it” is a simple concept, but the practice of it is often missing in action.

Understanding, at a high level, things like where you will spend money from first in retirement, or where you should invest most aggressively, helps alleviate confusion and anxiety.

If you understand what you are trying to accomplish and what you own to help you accomplish it, you can think less about money and more about the things that really matter to you.

There are times when it gets very tempting to listen to the voices around you telling you they know where the market is going next.

The talking heads in the financial media make it sound like it is a piece of cake to sell, sit on the sidelines and get back in at the perfect time. The reality is that anyone promoting this approach is oversimplifying things in a way that is not helpful for the vast majority of investors.

The idea that “there’s no such thing as a free lunch” is worth keeping front of mind as an investor. In markets, just like in life, there are no guarantees.

Despite how it’s often positioned, there is no risk-free way to reach your financial goals. Wall Street may package strategies to feel that way, but every approach comes with tradeoffs. The cost of any “free lunch” is always there. It’s just often hidden.

Spring is a good time to clean out the items you no longer use and get organized around the house, and it is also a good time to do the same when it comes to your finances.
