Long read, promise it's worth it.
Generational Wealth:
“Millennials are the first generation that are worse off than their parents.”
I recently heard that on a podcast that I was listening to and typically, when I hear “Baby Boomers this” or “Millennials that” I kind of check out.
Mostly because it’s followed with, “your generation just doesn’t understand hard work.” Right… couldn’t agree more… Also, where do these generations start and end? I’m still trying to figure that out.
But there is something here that’s worth paying attention to in that quote.
Here is where I’ve landed:
“The wealth that most people are chasing today is no longer attainable without thinking beyond your own lifetime."
It requires multi-generational planning.
Otherwise, the path is extreme concentration or a highly successful liquidity event (you build and sell a business). Both of which require an astronomical amount of risk.
So, why the shift?
Wages have been outpaced by cost of living. Ownership matters more than ever but is harder to access. Climbing the corporate ladder now requires more than just ability alone. It’s about proximity, negotiation skills, relationships, and positioning.
The “currency” of today’s economy is shifting away from hard work to things like leverage, access, and attention.
So, the vary basis of what we are doing fundamentally must change and I think it goes from a “how do I build wealth?” To, “how do WE build something that lasts?”
Wealth is no longer just about what you accumulate. We've heard the horror stories of "generational wealth" disappearing within one generation. It’s about what you’re able to sustain not just in dollars, but family values, identity, and purpose.
PRESSURE. I love it. The decisions we make today don’t just impact us, they impact generations. Pressure for sure, but I think when applied correctly it drives families to be more intentional, work together, and get aligned on WHO ARE WE?
So maybe millennials aren’t so behind after all, they just represent a line in sand where working together as a family has become of the utmost importance.
Good work, Unc.
And if that isn't your story, if you don't come from the best structure or foundation. Maybe you can be that line in the sand. Do the work, ask the questions, and discover who am I and what will I build from here?
