Another inspiring and thought provoking ESG for Impact Conference winds down today. Being able to support the scholarship program is always one of the highlights of the year for me. Spending time with these gifted, caring and passionate young people should give us all hope that we will be able to meet the daunting challenges ahead.

Using our Leverage as Investors to Fight Climate Change

The events of this summer have left no doubt that the more severe impacts of climate change are happening right now. In the last few months, we’ve seen record-setting heat in the Pacific Northwest, prolonged drought and fires throughout the west, and tremendous amounts of rain, flooding and damaging storms through much of the rest of the country. This is no longer a hypothetical future scenario and unfortunately, it’s only the beginning. While we’re well past the tipping point now, major steps can still be taken to avoid the worst outcomes. Government policy and changes in individual behaviors are critical but we can also use our leverage as investors to make a difference. Learn about solar options that fit your home. Find out if your house can use renewable heating and the financial incentives you can use to do so. Discover ways your home can become more energy efficient. Ask questions of people who drive electric cars. Consider how you can avoid food waste (one of the main contributors to global warming). Talk to owners of renewable energy and sustainable living companies, converse with local climate and environmental groups and more!
