Santa Maria, California Don't make that mistake again. Not a problem.

Been doing your taxes with turbo-tax but not sure if you're missing valuable deductions? Going to H&R Block and working with someone with no license that was trained to do taxes weeks before you met with them? Going to another CPA firm and paying an arm and a leg to get your return completed? Your tax return is extremely important, as filing them incorrectly can lead to missed refunds or fines. Wh

en your W2 and other tax information comes in, give me a call, or send me an email, to set up an appointment here at Moss, Levy & Hartzheim, and we will make sure that your tax return is filed correctly, and that every deduction available to you is taken. You can meet with me personally, or I can set up a meeting with one of my partners if you'd rather work with someone that you don't have a personal relationship with. Don't live in the Santa Maria area? A large percentage of our clients live out of the area, and either mail their tax information or send it to us through email. With modern technology, I have done taxes for people serving our country overseas, as well as people who have moved out of the area. Don't let not living in the area stop you from getting exceptional service with your taxes.

Tax season may feel like it's just getting started, but the filing deadline for pass-through entities-including LLCs taxed as partnerships, partnerships (form 1065), and s-corporations (form 1120-S)-is fast approaching. For calendar year filers, returns are due Monday, March 16th.

If you won't be ready to file by then, submit an extension request by the deadline to avoid late-filing penalties. This will typically give you until September 15th to file.

Important reminder: An extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. Any taxes owed (including pass-through elective taxes) must be paid by the original deadline to avoid late-payment penalties and interest.

Took a little time out of the office this weekend to watch our sponsored Vortex team play. One of our favorite interns left the weekend with a championship and the MVP. Great job Trevor!

Tax season 2026 is in full swing, and I am noticing larger refunds this year due to recent changes in tax law.

However, the largest refund possible—essentially giving the government an interest-free loan throughout the year—is not the ultimate goal.

Tax planning is a two-way street. Our aim is to ensure clients don't owe money and to minimize their tax liability as much as possible. At the same time, we also focus on reducing withholding or estimated tax amounts when feasible.

Big news for charitable givers under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act: Starting in 2026, you don't need to itemize deductions to get a tax break on your donations!

Even if you take the standard deduction (like most Americans do), you can now deduct up to $1,000 in cash contributions if you're single (or head of household), or up to $2,000 if married filing jointly.

This is an above-the-line deduction for qualified cash gifts directly to public charities (think checks, credit cards, or electronic transfers—not donor-advised funds or private foundations).

It means everyday donors—those without big mortgage interest, medical bills, or other itemized write-offs—can finally lower their taxable income and get real tax savings from their generosity. Small acts of giving just got a little more rewarding!

We're looking for an admin assistant to help our office during our busy tax season months of February through mid April. This applicant would preferably have experience working in a professional office, or another customer service oriented role. The job will consist of answering calls and emails from clients, helping scan confidential tax information, and helping our office manager in any way. If you're interested, or know of someone who may be, please send a resume to me at [email protected]. The hours are flexible, so this position could be filled by someone who has children in school and needs to leave to pick them up.

Individuals who pay property taxes, or submit estimated tax payments to the state of California, are advised to make these payments by December 31, 2025, to shift the associated deduction to 2025. In prior years, the $10,000 cap on state and local tax (SALT) deductions often rendered prepayment strategies ineffective. However, with the cap now increased to $40,000 (for those who don't have income of $500,000 or more), this approach presents a viable opportunity to optimize tax savings here in the last few days of 2025.

Inspired by the Invest American Program, the Dells donation will give $250 to children 10 and under who live in zip codes with median incomes of $150,000 or lower. These accounts will be locked until the child turns 18, and then the funds can be spent on qualified expenses such as education, home ownership, entrepreneurship, etc.

Billionaires Michael and Susan Dell pledged a historic $6.25 billion on Tuesday to provide an incentive to families to adopt new investment accounts for children.

We are proud sponsors of the Vortex baseball program for the work they do with boys in the area, not only working with them on baseball but into becoming great young men. Great to see their success winning the mini tournament they played in yesterday, and especially proud of one of our favorite interns being named MVP.
