πŸŽ‰ Happy Friday, Santa Ana!

Here's how it usually goes: Monday through Friday disappears into work, school pickup and everything else β€” and "I'll deal with my taxes" quietly becomes "I'll deal with it next month."

That's exactly why we keep weekend hours:

πŸ—“οΈ Saturdays β€” 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM
πŸ—“οΈ Sundays β€” by appointment only

Come in with whatever's been sitting on your mind. The return you didn't get filed. The quarterly paperwork due November 2. Getting your books straightened out before year-end. No rush, no lunch break squeezed between meetings.

Enjoy the weekend β€” and if you'd rather spend one hour of it getting the tax thing off your plate, we'll be here. β˜•

🧾 Four deductions now live on Schedule 1-A β€” and the paperwork for them is far easier to gather in October than in April.

Here's what's on the form, and the cap on each:

β€’ Qualified tips β€” up to $25,000, phasing out above $150,000 MAGI ($300,000 joint)
β€’ Qualified overtime premium β€” up to $12,500 ($25,000 joint), same phase-out thresholds
β€’ Car loan interest β€” up to $10,000 on a qualifying new, U.S.-assembled vehicle, phasing out above $100,000 MAGI ($200,000 joint)
β€’ Seniors 65 and over β€” $6,000 per qualifying person, $12,000 if both spouses qualify, phasing out above $75,000 MAGI ($150,000 joint)

Two things to do now:

βœ… Starting with tax year 2026, employers must report qualified overtime separately β€” check your pay stubs and ask payroll if that number isn't showing.
βœ… Financing a vehicle? You'll need the lender's year-end interest statement and the VIN.

All four are available whether you itemize or take the standard deduction. Not sure which ones you qualify for? Bring us your pay stubs and we'll map it out before year-end.

πŸ’Ό Self-employed, 1099, or running a side business? Your fourth-quarter estimated payment is due January 15, 2027 β€” and what you do between now and December 31 decides how big that check is.

Quick refresher on the federal safe harbor: you generally avoid an underpayment penalty if you pay in at least 100% of last year's total tax (110% if your AGI was over $150,000) or 90% of this year's tax.

Three things to check before year-end:

1️⃣ Add up everything you've actually paid in for 2026, including withholding from a W-2 job or a spouse's paycheck.
2️⃣ California runs its own schedule. The state weights installments 30% / 40% / 0% / 30% β€” that's why there was no September payment, and the remaining 30% is due January 15, 2027.
3️⃣ Income jumped this year? Bumping up withholding on a year-end paycheck often fixes an underpayment more cleanly than writing a bigger check in January.

Guessing is what turns into a surprise bill in April. We'll run your numbers and tell you exactly what to set aside.

⏰ The October 15 extension deadline has come and gone. If your return is still sitting unfiled, here's why every week counts.

The failure-to-file penalty is 5% of the unpaid tax for each month or part of a month your return is late, capped at 25%. The failure-to-pay penalty is 0.5% per month. Filing late costs ten times more than paying late.

Three things people get wrong:

πŸ“Œ More than 60 days late? The minimum failure-to-file penalty is the smaller of $525 or 100% of the tax owed.
πŸ“Œ Can't pay the balance? File anyway. An IRS installment agreement costs far less than letting the filing penalty run.
πŸ“Œ Expecting a refund? No late-filing penalty applies β€” but you have three years to claim that money before it's gone for good.

The fix is the same in every case: get the return filed. We'll prepare it, walk you through your penalty exposure, and set up a payment plan if you need one. No judgment β€” we see this every October.

πŸ“… Business owners: three third-quarter filings all land on Monday, November 2.

October 31 is a Saturday this year, so every Q3 2026 deadline shifts to the next business day:

βœ”οΈ Form 941 β€” your federal quarterly payroll tax return
βœ”οΈ DE 9 and DE 9C β€” the EDD quarterly wage reports
βœ”οΈ CDTFA-401 β€” the California quarterly sales and use tax return

Three things worth knowing before you file:

β€’ Deposited all your Q3 payroll taxes on time and in full? You have until November 10 to file Form 941.
β€’ CDTFA wants a return for every period β€” even a quarter with no sales.
β€’ A late sales tax return or payment runs 10% of the tax due.

Two weeks is plenty of time to reconcile payroll records and sales figures, but only if you start this week. At GA Income Tax we prepare quarterly payroll and sales tax filings for small businesses across Orange County, and we're glad to take this one off your plate.
