The internet crooks see this as an opportunity, and the scams are rampant. They’re taking advantage of our desire for information in order to spread malware.
One example- an Android app called “COVID19 Tracker” will lock your phone, and require a $100 bitcoin ransom.

We need to be more careful than ever. Watch out for emails from unknown senders. Check email addresses for authenticity. Don’t click on links or open attachments from unknown sources. Use trusted sources, such as legitimate government websites for information.

Let’s stay safe!

The crooks are getting better. Now they call and impersonate the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service with spoofed IRS phone numbers, last 4 of your ss #, fake badge , follow up emails, and fake follow up calls pretending to be law enforcement. Don't give any info, just hang up.

If you deduct auto expenses, get your odometer reading tomorrow morning. Get auto maintenance soon to use as independent verification of the reading.

If you meant to sign up for health insurance, but missed the December 15th deadline, you may still be able to because of hurricane Irma. New deadline is December 31.

12/21/2017

If you had uninsured damage from hurricane Irma in excess of $500, you can deduct it, even if you don't itemize! If you haven't filed for 2016 yet, you can claim it on that return!

If you have a Florida business other than a sole proprietorship, you will likely receive letters that look official wanting to "file your minutes", etc. They generally come from Tallahassee. I throw them in the recycle bin.

If you deduct vehicle expenses, be sure to record your odometer mileage as of December 31. If you claim medical and charitable deductions, track those miles.
