Three operational systems every growing SMB should have:

1. KPI visibility
2. Documented SOPs
3. Recurring leadership meetings

Without operational systems, growth becomes reactive.

The businesses that scale sustainably build structure before problems force them to.

Operational maturity creates:
✔ Alignment
✔ Accountability
✔ Clarity
✔ Better decision-making

Leadership maturity isn’t about controlling everything.

It’s about learning to scale trust.

That means:
• Empowering leaders
• Creating accountability
• Delegating effectively

building operational confidence across the team

Strong companies don’t grow because one person works harder.
They grow because leadership capacity expands throughout the organization.

There’s a difference between being busy… and being scalable.

Busy owners:
• React constantly
• Solve every problem personally
• Stay trapped in operations

Scalable CEOs:
• Build leaders
• Create systems
• Empower decision-making
• Focus on long-term strategy

Growth requires shifting from operator → leader.

Operational maturity starts when leadership no longer depends on one person carrying everything.

Danielle Vroegh represented Badger CPA at the I-LinCP San Antonio luncheon, "Unlocking Potential: Reimagining San Antonio's Underutilized Real Estate."

The discussion explored spatial justice and how underutilized land and community assets can be transformed into opportunities for affordable housing, economic mobility, and neighborhood revitalization.

Thank you to the outstanding panelists—Sarah Woolsey, Paola Aguirre Serrano, and Nadia Mavrakis—and moderator Councilmember Marina Alderete Gavito for sharing valuable insights on equitable development and community-centered planning.

We appreciate the opportunity to connect with leaders who are helping shape stronger, more resilient communities throughout San Antonio.

What an incredible experience at Karbon Next!

The event brought together accounting and advisory professionals from across the industry to share ideas, explore innovation, and discuss what's next for the profession. We left energized by the conversations, connections, and forward-thinking perspectives shared throughout the event.

We were especially proud to see members of our leadership team sharing their expertise, insights, and experiences with attendees. Their contributions reflected the leadership, innovation, and commitment to excellence that drive our team every day.

Last week, our managing partner, Shannon led two sessions at the Austin Build Expo focused on challenges we see impacting contractors every day:

How labor tracking and payroll compliance directly impact job profitability, cash flow, bonding capacity, and audit readiness

Common labor-related profit leaks that affect bidding accuracy and overall project performance

Strategies for improving labor burden visibility and strengthening job costing systems

The accounting and compliance requirements contractors face after winning government contracts

Navigating DCAA audits, FAR Part 31 cost regulations, labor distribution, and indirect rate calculations

Building accounting systems and internal controls that support compliance, improve reporting, and help contractors get paid faster

The conversations throughout the event reinforced what we're seeing across the industry: successful construction companies are investing in stronger financial systems, better operational visibility, and scalable processes that support sustainable growth.

Thanks to everyone who attended. We appreciate the opportunity to share insights and connect with professionals who are helping build the future of Texas.

A sincere thank you to Brooke Benson and the team at LISC San Antonio for the invitation to participate in the 2026 Effective Boards series and for creating space for such an engaging and important conversation.

It was a pleasure for both Shannon and Jonathan to join nonprofit leaders from across San Antonio to discuss the role of the Treasurer and the broader responsibilities of effective board governance.

One of the most valuable parts of the discussion was the thoughtful dialogue from attendees. We explored not only the technical aspects of financial oversight, budgeting, and reporting, but also the role board members play in fostering accountability, transparency, and long-term organizational sustainability.

We enjoyed the discussion and the opportunity to connect with so many dedicated nonprofit professionals.

We’re excited to share that three Badger leaders are speaking at Karbon Next, bringing real-world perspectives on the future of pricing, growth, culture, and client experience in an AI-driven industry.

🎤 Shannon Badger - “Pricing in the Age of AI: Time, Value, and What Your Firm Is Really Selling”

As AI compresses hours of work into seconds, firms are being forced to rethink the relationship between effort and value. Shannon will join a panel exploring what modern pricing models actually work in today’s environment—and what firm leaders need to rethink to stay profitable.

🎤 Krystal Gibson Engelhardt - “Human-Led GTM in an AI World”

AI is changing prospect expectations, sales conversations, and onboarding. Krystal will share how firms can modernize their go-to-market strategy while keeping relationships and human connection at the center.

🎤 Amanda Owens, PAFM Owens - “The Cultural Architect”

Technology is evolving fast—but culture is still the foundation. Amanda will join firm leaders discussing how to build teams that embrace AI as a tool for growth, not a threat, while developing the next generation of advisory talent.

We can't wait to connect with the Karbon team: Ian Vacin, Timothy Donohoue, Jessica Martin, Lachlan Macindoe, Mariana Montana, Elizabeth Blass, Twyla Verhelst, CPA! We are also looking forward to taking the stage with Melisa Gaetani!

If you’re attending Karbon Next, we’d love to connect.
