This Labor Day weekend, we’re celebrating the people behind the businesses that keep our communities moving.

The founders who took a chance. The teams who show up every day. The family businesses built over generations. And the small business owners creating jobs, opportunities and stronger communities across Texas.

At Badger CPA, we’re fortunate to work alongside so many of these businesses—and to be part of communities that actively champion their success.

Thank you to the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and ‌Austin Chamber of Commerce for the work you do to support the people and businesses helping our cities thrive.

Here’s to everyone building something, growing something and contributing to the communities we call home.

If you’re burning the candle at both ends, we hope you find some rest during your Labor Day holiday weekend.

The best businesses don't grow because they avoid mistakes—they grow because they learn from them.

Every decision provides valuable feedback. The businesses that continue to scale are the ones willing to test ideas, learn quickly, and adjust with better information.

Continuous improvement isn't about getting everything right the first time. It's about making the next decision a better one.

Small improvements, made consistently, lead to stronger operations, better leadership, and sustainable growth.

If an M&A opportunity landed on your desk tomorrow, would your company be ready?

For GovCon leaders, some of the biggest questions around M&A don’t have simple answers:

➡️ How do you know when your company is actually ready to acquire another business?
➡️ What is a buyer really looking for when they evaluate a GovCon company?
➡️ Which financial or compliance issues can become red flags during due diligence?
➡️ What can you do now to increase the value of your business before an eventual sale?
➡️ And what do leaders who have actually bought and sold companies wish they had known before going through the process?

These are exactly the conversations we’ll be having during The GovCon M&A Playbook.

We’re bringing together experienced GovCon leaders and advisors from both sides of the transaction to talk candidly about buying, selling, financing, due diligence, financial readiness, and what really happens when a deal moves from strategy to ex*****on.
Whether you're actively considering M&A or simply building a company you may eventually buy, grow, or sell, this conversation is designed to help you prepare for what comes next.

The best use of AI in accounting is not removing people from the process. It is removing repetitive work from their day.

AI can help finance teams categorize transactions, identify anomalies, organize information, answer routine questions, and surface patterns that deserve attention.

But efficiency does not eliminate the need for review.

Imagine that an AI tool identifies a sudden improvement in gross margin. That may be a real operational gain—or it may be caused by an incorrectly coded expense, an incomplete inventory adjustment, or revenue recorded in the wrong period.

Before acting on an AI-generated result, ask:
• What data produced this answer?
• Has the information been reconciled?
• Does the conclusion make sense operationally?
• Are there unusual transactions affecting the result?
• Who is responsible for approving the output?

The goal is not to choose between technology and professional judgment. The stronger approach is to use automation for speed and human oversight for context, accountability, and consequential decisions.

By the time a business prepares its tax return, many planning opportunities have already passed.

Tax preparation explains what happened. Tax planning looks ahead and gives leadership time to make informed decisions.

Important reminder: Third-quarter estimated tax payments, covering June 1–August 31, are due September 15, 2026. If your business has experienced significant changes this year, now is a good time to revisit your projections and estimated payments.

A productive planning conversation should examine:
• Projected annual income
• Estimated tax payments
• Owner compensation
• Business and personal cash needs
• Entity structure
• Planned equipment or capital purchases
• Retirement contributions
• Significant changes in the business

Suppose your company is having a stronger year than expected. Without an updated projection, leadership may distribute excess cash, approve a major hire, or make an investment without accounting for an upcoming tax obligation.

The goal isn't to make business decisions solely for tax reasons. It's to understand the potential tax impact before making those decisions.

Planning creates choices. Waiting until filing season often leaves fewer options.

What a fantastic way to kick off Fed Supernova!

We had a great time co-sponsoring Network Before Launch, an evening that brought together founders, operators, investors, government leaders, and industry partners from across the defense, dual-use, and innovation ecosystem.
The room was filled with great energy and so many inspiring founders working to bring bold ideas to life. A special highlight was the fireside chat with Richard Browning, founder of Gravity Industries, and Marc Cervantes, founder and CEO of Q-Branch.

Thank you to Marc Cervantes and Josh Zelman of Q-Branch, along with Drew Scheberle of NSIC, for hosting, organizing, and spearheading the programming.

We were proud to help bring this community together and launch an exciting week at Capital Factory’s Fed Supernova!

Behind every number is a person, a business, and a story worth understanding.

As Co-Chairs of the Small Business Council for the San Antonio Chamber, Shannon and Jonathan have the opportunity to connect with local business owners, learn about the challenges they face, and support the people working hard to grow their companies.

For us, accounting is about more than reports. It is about listening, building relationships, and helping business owners make more confident decisions.

We recently sat down with John Eubank, Founder & CEO of 10x National Security, to learn how investing in strong financial systems early helped his company build resilience while scaling. From implementing Unanet before growth demanded it to creating a culture of ownership and accountability, his journey offers valuable lessons for government contractors at every stage.

One of our favorite takeaways:
"Just do it. Don't talk about it. Don't plan it. Don't write it down. Just go do it. The best way to learn how to do it right is to first do it wrong."

Read the full client spotlight to learn how 10x National Security built the financial foundation to support long-term growth and why resilient accounting operations matter in GovCon.
