Forget looksmaxxing.

We're focused on money maxxing over here ๐Ÿค‘

If I wanted to keep more of my hard-earned money as a business owner, here's where I'd start โ†“

1๏ธโƒฃ Track every single expense

Not exactly revolutionary advice, I know.

But missed expenses can mean missed tax deductions.

And missed tax deductions usually mean paying more in taxes than necessary.

No thank you ๐Ÿ‘Ž

2๏ธโƒฃ Be brutally honest about your spending

Once a month, sit down with your P&L and review every expense.

Not just the total.

Every line item.

If you can't clearly explain why an expense is helping your business, it might be time to cut it.

3๏ธโƒฃ Schedule a tax planning meeting

Taxes are one of the biggest expenses most business owners will ever have.

The business owners who save the most are usually the ones planning ahead, not scrambling at tax time.

Keeping more of what you earn isn't about being cheap.

It's about being intentional.

One of the most common questions I get from new clients is:

"What do you actually need access to?" ๐Ÿ‘€

In short, I need to be able to see how money moves through your business.

That usually means access to things like:

โ†’ Bank accounts and credit cards
(read-only access is perfectly fine, or you can upload statements each month)

โ†’ Payment processors like Stripe, PayPal, Square, Shopify, or HoneyBook

โ†’ Loan statements so payments are recorded correctly

โ†’ Your payroll provider, whether that's Gusto, ADP, QuickBooks Payroll, or another platform

โ†’ Prior-year tax returns

I know handing over financial information can feel a little intimidating.

But protecting client data is something I take seriously ๐Ÿ”’

I only request access that's necessary to keep your books accurate, organized, and up to date.

And if you're ever unsure why I'm asking for something, I'm always happy to explain the "why" behind it.

Some pro tips from a bookkeeper who has survived more account reconciliations than she'd like to admit ๐Ÿ˜Œ

If your accounts never seem to reconcile correctly, you're probably making one of these common mistakes:

โ†’ Starting with the wrong beginning balance

โ†’ Using statement dates that don't match the period you're reconciling

โ†’ Ignoring small differences and hoping they'll magically work themselves out

Spoiler alert:
They won't ๐Ÿ˜…

Most reconciliation issues come down to one missing transaction, duplicate transaction, typo, or incorrectly entered date.

The key is finding the problem before it snowballs into bigger issues for your financial reports.

A clean reconciliation means you can actually trust the numbers you're using to make business decisions.

And that's kind of the whole point.

If bookkeeping keeps getting pushed to the bottom of your to-do list, I can help with that too.

Feel a little overwhelmed by payroll? ๐Ÿ˜…

Between employee benefits, overtime, tax filings, holiday schedules, and compliance requirements...

It's a lot to keep track of.

Most people know I offer monthly bookkeeping services.

What they don't always realize is that payroll is one of my most popular add-ons ๐Ÿ‘€

When I handle payroll for a professional service business, here's what that includes:

โ†’ Reviewing or setting up your QuickBooks payroll system

โ†’ Processing payroll on a regular schedule

โ†’ Checking that employee and contractor documentation is in order

โ†’ Preparing W-2s and 1099s

And my favorite benefit?

No more lying awake wondering if payroll was submitted in time before a holiday weekend ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

Because getting your team paid correctly and on time should not be another thing stressing you out.

If you're a business owner, there's about a 97% chance your bookkeeping journey looked something like this ๐Ÿ˜…

โ†’ Start with a spreadsheet

โ†’ Promise yourself you'll keep it updated every week

โ†’ Get busy serving clients

โ†’ Fall a little behind

โ†’ Fall a lot behind

โ†’ Realize it's tax season ๐Ÿ‘€

โ†’ Wonder how things got this out of hand

No judgment here.

This is basically the standard professional service business owner experience.

In fact, most of my clients started in a spreadsheet with the absolute best intentions.

The difference is that eventually they decided they'd rather spend their time running their business than catching up on months of bookkeeping.

That's where I come in ๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธ

I help professional service businesses get organized, understand their numbers, and stop dreading tax season.

My current reading list is a mix of business growth and pure escapism ๐Ÿ“š

On one hand, give me the books that make me think differently about running a business.

On the other hand... I will absolutely make time for a good romantasy novel โœจ

At the top of my list right now:

๐Ÿ“– Making It Without Losing It by

๐Ÿ“– Point Taken

Both moved to the top of my TBR after getting the chance to meet the wonderful authors through .

Now I need recommendations ๐Ÿ‘€

Business owners, what's on your summer reading list?

Opening a business bank account is one of those tasks business owners put off for months...

Then you finally do it and realize it took about 30 minutes ๐Ÿ˜…

And here's something a lot of people don't realize:

You do *not* have to use the same bank you use for your personal accounts.

Different banks offer different fees, features, minimum balances, and integrations.

So it's worth shopping around before you commit ๐Ÿฆ

The right business bank account can make managing your finances a whole lot easier.

Comment "BANK" and I'll send you my free guide covering:

โ†’ What you'll need to open a business bank account

โ†’ How to choose the right bank for your business

โ†’ My personal bank recommendations for professional service businesses

HOT TAKE: It should be illegal for a tax deadline to fall on a Monday ๐Ÿ™ƒ

And if you've ever noticed that quarterly estimated taxes don't exactly follow a "quarterly" schedule, there's a reason for that โ†“

Back in the day, Tax Day was March 15th.

Congress counted three months forward and set the next estimated tax deadline for June 15th ๐Ÿ“†

Then Tax Day moved to April 15th...

But the June 15th estimated tax deadline never moved with it.

Which means you get a full three months between some estimated tax payments...

And only two months between others ๐Ÿ˜…

So yes, your Q2 estimated taxes really are due surprisingly soon after your April payment.

I don't make the rules.

I just help business owners stay on top of them ๐Ÿคท
