There is a common assumption

The more control you have
The better the outcome

In reality
Misplaced control often leads to more stress

And poorer decisions

Because attention is focused where it has the least impact

A familiar situation

Something external changes

And the immediate reaction is to respond

Try to stay ahead

Markets move
Economies shift
Conditions change

These are constants

And yet a significant amount of energy is spent trying to manage them

Not because it works consistently

But because it feels like the right thing to do

There is a natural desire to feel in control

Especially when it comes to money

Control over outcomes
Control over timing
Control over uncertainty

But much of what people try to control
Is not actually controllable

We refer to this as the "Control Gap"

The space between effort and influence

He had done all the right things over the years. He saved consistently, made thoughtful decisions, and stayed patient when it mattered.

From the outside, everything pointed toward confidence. But when we sat down, that was not what showed up.

There was a quieter question underneath it all. He asked whether he had truly done enough, or if he had just been hoping things would work out.

That place is more common than most people admit. Because at this stage, the work is largely behind you. What remains is figuring out whether what you built can actually support the life you want.

So we slowed things down and walked through it together. We talked about what his days could look like and what mattered most, not just what the numbers said.

Over time, the pressure started to ease. Not because everything became certain, but because it finally became clear.

And clarity has a way of changing how everything feels.

Retirement confidence does not come from hoping. It comes from understanding where you stand before you take the next step.

A business owner almost locked into a tax plan for selling their company too early. The issue wasn't the taxes. It was that there wasn't a real deal yet, and no clear timeline for one.

We chose to pause. That felt uncomfortable in the moment, but it kept their options open. Planning for taxes before you even have a deal can limit your choices. It's better to wait until the path is clearer.

Service is often described in broad terms, but its meaning is always personal.

National Military Appreciation Month invites us to pause and recognize that service is rooted in love for what waits at home, for the people and places that shape who we are. The uniform represents commitment, but it also represents families, routines interrupted, and choices made in service of something greater than oneself.

Today is about acknowledging that reality with sincerity. About honoring both the visible and unseen sacrifices. About remembering that appreciation does not have to be grand to be genuine.

Sometimes it is enough to simply notice, reflect, and say thank you in a way that feels real.

A pretty incredible moment with my favorite people at the Temple of Edfu.

Traveling through Egypt with my family was absolutely unforgettable, partly because it puts time into perspective. This temple took nearly 180 years to complete. Generation after generation contributing to something bigger than themselves, guided by a shared vision and the willingness to work together toward a common goal.

It is a good reminder that the things that truly last are rarely built quickly. They are shaped patiently, collaboratively, and with intention over time.

Grateful for the experience, the history, and most of all the people I get to share it with.

One of the best client outcomes I have ever seen did not come from a spreadsheet. It came from a phone call.

The client already had a CPA, a trust attorney, and me as their wealth advisor. Everyone was smart. Everyone cared. But we had all been working off slightly different assumptions, without realizing it. When we finally got on the same call, something small but important popped up about how assets were supposed to move after a business sale. Cue a pause, a laugh from the client, and a collective "well that explains it."

What followed was my favorite part of this job. No posturing. No defensiveness. Just real conversation. The CPA talked through tax implications, the attorney explained intent behind the trust structure, and I helped connect it all back to what the client actually wanted their life to look like.

By the end, the plan was clearer, better aligned, and honestly more enjoyable to build. The client said it felt like a team for the first time, not a game of telephone.

This is why communication across advisors matters. When everyone is in the same room, even virtually, good plans become great ones. And the process feels a whole lot more human.
