Tax Help Utah Do-It-yourself option used to use H&R Block and now uses Taxslayer, why?
H&R Block started charging for their returns if you use certain forms and our returns use these forms, so not too many are free. Taxslayer began as a family firm 50 years okay. this is the same software that VITA and AARP uses for their in person programs.
All tax return data goes to the same IRS forms no matter the software you use. Taxslayer is a little different from H&R Block but the same interview process is used and it has a well staffed help line. Income up to $73,000 uses taxslayer. If your income is higher the software takes you to Credit Karma.
All forms for federal and state returns are free!!!

What is the scanning process? Why do you use it?
The scanning process is one of our responses to covid. We have restrictions for physical space and for volunteers who prefer working remotely. Moving from traditional VITA to scanning gives us 3X the capacity over traditional.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
You go to Tax Help Utah and select in person. Most appointments are at Sorenson and as we use half the computers we use to, we scan. The process ensures you only spend 30 minutes at the site and return in 10 business days to pickup your return. If you have an appointment on February 7, we interview and scan your documents, a volunteer is assigned your return, a second volunteer Quality reviews it and on Feb 21, you sign for and pick it up. DONE - you have spent a total of 45 minutes of your time to get your tax return completed.

Will my refund be hurt by the Child Tax Credit I got last year?
You received half of the increased child credit from July to December last year (2021). The other half will be part of your tax refund in this years' (2022) tax return. The maximum child Tax credit refund was $1,400 and this year it will be $1,500 or $1,800 depending upon the age of your child.
Unless.....(there is always a but) you used the non-refundable credit last year. What does that mean ? Check line 19 on last years' tax return. the number you see there might be the amount your Child tax credit refund is reduced this year.

Is your child in day care and you pay out of pocket for it? There is a new/improved Dependent Care Credit. You can claim up to $8,000 and part of it is now refundable. Refundable means that if you don't need it to pay taxes, you get it back as part of your refund!
