The easiest steps to begin Medicare involve using the Social Security Administration's online portal to sign up during your Initial Enrollment Period or go to the local office in your area, which is the 7-month window around your 65th birthday. For most people, this process can be completed in less than 10 to 30 minutes.
Here are the easiest steps to begin Medicare:
1. Determine Your Eligibility and Enrollment Method
Automatic Enrollment: If you are already receiving Social Security benefits at least four months before you turn 65, you will be automatically enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B. You will receive your Medicare card in the mail about three months before your 65th birthday.
Sign Up Yourself: If you are not yet receiving benefits, you must proactively sign up. The easiest way is to apply online at the Social Security website (SSA.gov).
2. Create a "my Social Security" Account
Go to ssa.gov and create a secure personal account. This is the fastest way to apply for Medicare, check your application status, and, if necessary, get a replacement card.
3. Submit Your Application Online
Visit the SSA website and select "Apply for Medicare Only" (you do not need to be retiring to sign up for Medicare at 65).
Fill out the application, which usually takes 10–30 minutes.
If you are still working and have employer-sponsored coverage, you may choose to sign up for only Part A (hospitalization) and delay Part B (medical) to avoid premiums.
4. Review Your Coverage Options (Part C and D)
Once you have Original Medicare (Parts A and B), you can choose to stay with that or switch to a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C), which is offered by private insurers and sometimes bundles in prescription drug coverage. Check your area first, to be sure this plan will work.
You can also add a stand-alone Part D prescription drug plan or a Medigap policy to fill in costs not covered by Original Medicare.
5. Mark Your Calendar (Initial Enrollment Period)
Your 7-month window includes the three months before your 65th birthday, your birthday month, and the three months after.
Signing up during the three months before your 65th birthday ensures your coverage starts the month you turn 65.
