Yes, today is Tax Day.

Hopefully, you’re feeling that sweet sense of relief because everything is filed and done. But if you’re sitting there thinking, “I’m not quite where I wanted to be…” — take a breath. You’re not alone, and you still have options.

Here’s what you need to know:
• You have until 11:59 PM tonight to file your federal and state taxes
• You can request a 6-month extension (Form 4868)
• To qualify for that extension, you’ll need to pay at least 80% of what you owe today

And one more tip from me: don’t tuck those tax documents away just yet. If you’re planning to apply for a loan—whether it’s a mortgage, business loan, or even education financing—you’re going to need them. Keeping everything handy will save you time (and a headache) later.

Hard to believe, but we’re already in the final stretch of tax season.

Around this time, I start hearing a lot of the same questions:

“Did I forget anything?”
“Will the IRS contact me if something is missing?”
“What should I keep for my records?”

Taxes don’t really end on April 15th. Refunds, letters, identity verification requests, and record-keeping all happen after filing, and knowing what to expect can make things much less stressful.

Early March is when most people finally sit down with all of their tax forms and think, “I’ll just try to do this myself this weekend.”

I completely understand the temptation. The software makes it look simple. But this is also the time of year I start getting calls from people who realize something doesn’t make sense, or they aren’t sure what they’re supposed to enter.

Here are some of the things I’m already helping people work through this season:

• 1099-K income from Venmo, PayPal, Square, or online sales
• Side hustle income that didn’t come with a tax form
• The Health Insurance Marketplace Form 1095-A
• Which business expenses actually qualify as deductions
• Parents who are both planning to claim the same child

The IRS compares your return to the records it receives from employers, banks, and marketplaces. When something doesn’t match, a notice is mailed later in the year with penalties and interest added.

Tax preparation is more than entering numbers. It’s making sure everything is reported correctly the first time.
