Esmeralda here with your weekend reminder that your side hustle money is, in fact, taxable. She checked. 🐱

Selling online, freelancing, driving, getting paid through apps. All of it counts as income, whether a form shows up in January or not. The IRS already gets reports from the payment platforms, so your return has to match what they see. Esmeralda does not make the rules. She just enforces them from this couch.

The good news is you do not need an LLC or anything fancy to do this right. A spreadsheet, a receipt folder, and a habit of logging things the week they happen. Track your mileage as you go too, because nobody remembers their February drives in December, not even her, and she remembers every time the treat bag has opened since 2019.

And if nobody is withholding taxes from that income, a plan for quarterly estimates keeps the penalties away.

Side income is real income. Treat it that way from day one and tax season stays boring.

Esmeralda will be napping until further notice. You have work to do.

S-Corp owners: December 31 is your real deadline, not April 15.

By the time filing season arrives, almost everything that determines your S-Corp tax outcome is already locked. The window to actually change the numbers closes when the year does.

Your reasonable compensation has to be paid through payroll by December 31. You cannot go back in February and run salary for a year that already ended. If your salary has been too low, the last payroll runs of the year are your chance to correct it.

Your W-2 needs to reflect health insurance premiums for owners above 2%, and that gets set up in payroll before the year closes, not after. Miss it and the deduction gets complicated fast.

Solo 401(k) employee deferrals have to come out of payroll by December 31, no extensions. Distributions need to be documented. The books need to be clean enough to file an accurate 1120-S come March.

April is when the results get reported. December is when they get decided.

If you run an S-Corp and have not reviewed your payroll, salary, and benefits setup yet, these next ten weeks are the whole game.

I was asked the other day what my top tip would be, and without hesitation, my answer is separate your business and personal money. Today.

I have cleaned up hundreds of sets of books, and almost every expensive mess traces back to one account trying to do two jobs. Missed deductions nobody could identify. Transactions mislabeled for months. Tax prep that costs double because someone has to untangle a year of mixed spending.

One business account. One business card. Every business dollar flows through them and nothing else does.

It costs nothing to set up, takes an afternoon, and pays you back every single tax season. It makes your deductions defensible, your books usable, and your numbers something you can actually run a business on.

Fancy tax strategies get all the attention. This boring one is worth more than most of them combined.

If you do one thing for your business this week, make it this.
