*** New filing method for Minnesotan's renters! ***

Claim the Renter's Credit on Your Income Tax Return
Starting with your 2024 taxes, if you are a renter, you can claim the Renter's Credit as part of your Minnesota Individual Income Tax return (Form M1). You will no longer file a Renter's Property Tax Refund return (Form M1PR). This means renters who previously filed both returns will not receive a separate refund later in the year.

The Renter's Credit is a refundable credit on an income tax return. It will be part of the amount owed or refund.

*** New Certificate of Rent Paid Requirement ***
For rental property owners and managing agents in Minnesota

If you own or manage a rental property and rent living space to someone, you must provide a CRP to each renter if either of these apply:
- Property tax was payable on the property.
- The property is tax-exempt, but you made payments in lieu of property taxes.
- You must give each renter a CRP by January 31 of each year.

*Beginning with 2024 Certificates of Rent Paid, you must create and submit all Minnesota CRPs using e-Services.

CHILD TAX CREDIT
Beginning with tax year 2024, eligible Minnesotans may qualify for a Child Tax Credit of $1,750 per qualifying child, with no limit on the number of children claimed. This is a refundable credit, meaning you can receive a refund even if you do not owe tax. If a qualifying child is over age 17, you may not claim them for the Child Tax Credit. You may be able to claim the child for the Credit for Qualifying Older Children.

The credit gradually phases out if your income is over $31,090 ($36,880 for Married Filing Jointly).

CREDIT FOR QUALIFYING OLDER CHILDREN
If you have a qualifying child who is older than 17, you may be eligible for the Credit for Qualifying Older Children.

The credit is:
$970 for one qualifying older child
$2,210 for two qualifying older children
$2,630 for three or more qualifying older children
The credit phases out if your income is over $31,090 ($36,880 for Married Filing Jointly).
