๐ŸŒŠ Does your home insurance cover water in your basement or crawl space?

Most homeowners assume it does. Many find out it doesn't -- after the damage is done.

Standard home insurance policies do not cover water backup from sewers, drains, or a failed sump pump. That coverage is a separate add-on, and it's a common gap on home policies.

When record snowfall starts to melt, that water has to go somewhere. Storm drains get overwhelmed. Water tables rise. Sump pumps work overtime -- and sometimes fail. The result can be thousands of dollars in damage to floors, walls, and personal belongings.

Water backup coverage is typically very affordable to add to your existing policy -- and now is the time to make sure you have it.

โš ๏ธ CHECK YOUR SUMP PUMP! โš ๏ธ

The sun is out and the snow is melting.

๐Ÿ’ง Pour a bucket of water slowly into the sump pit. The float should rise, and the pump should kick on automatically. Watch to make sure water is discharged away from your foundation and listen for any grinding or rattling -- that's a sign something is wrong.

๐Ÿ”Œ Check that the discharge line outside isn't frozen or blocked. A pump that runs but can't drain is just as useless as one that doesn't run at all.

๐Ÿ“ž If anything seems off, call your local plumber now -- before the rush. Every plumber in the area will be slammed once the melt starts.

๐Ÿ”‹ And while you're at it, consider adding an additional battery backup to your sump pump. If you lose power during the melt and your pump goes down, you could be looking at a flooded basement fast.

Don't wait until you're standing in water. A little prevention now goes a long way. ๐Ÿ’™

Storm damage isn't always obvious right away. Once it's safe to get outside, walk through this checklist, and take photos of anything that looks off.

๐Ÿ  Roof & exterior
โœ… Check the roof for missing, loose, or damaged shingles.
โœ… Inspect siding, fascia, soffits, and your chimney for anything that shifted or took a hit from the wind.
โœ… Clear out any ice and packed snow from gutters and downspouts. Break up any ice dams.
โœ… Look for water staining on exterior walls or your foundation
โœ… Make sure your sump pump is ready -- the melt is coming.

๐ŸชŸ Windows & doors
โœ… Check frames for warping or gaps from the freeze/thaw cycle.
โœ… Inspect caulking and weather stripping for cracks or separation.

๐Ÿก Inside your home
โœ… Head up to the attic and down to the basement and look for signs of moisture, leaks, or new water stains on ceilings and walls.

๐Ÿ“ธ Document everything.
Before you make any repairs, take photos of all damage.

Stay safe out there! ๐Ÿ’™

โ„๏ธ The drifts are winning. โ„๏ธ

The snow and high winds are continuing today as temperatures drop.

๐Ÿ“ If you go out, make sure someone knows where you are and where youโ€™re headed.

โ„๏ธ New drifting can block furnace and gas appliance vents fast. Step outside carefully and make sure theyโ€™re clear. A blocked vent is a carbon monoxide risk. โ˜ ๏ธ

๐Ÿ”‹ Charge your phone now. Donโ€™t wait.

๐Ÿซ€ Pace yourself shoveling. Overexertion in extreme cold is one of the leading causes of cardiac events in winter storms. Take breaks. Ask for help.

๐Ÿšฐ Open cabinet doors under your sinks to keep pipes from freezing. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

๐Ÿš— If you must drive, let your car fully warm up first and make sure your exhaust pipe is completely clear of snow before you go anywhere. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle โ€“ blanket, water, flashlight, a phone charger, and sand or kitty litter for traction. ๐ŸงŠ

๐Ÿ†˜ If you get stuck. Call 911 so emergency services and plow drivers can be notified of your location.

๐Ÿงก Check on your neighbors.

Weโ€™re all in this together. Stay warm!

03/15/2026

โš ๏ธ WARNING โš ๏ธWith all this snow, check your exterior vents. High-efficiency furnaces and gas appliances vent out the side of your home through PVC pipes, they can be low on the exterior wall. If snow has drifted over them, it can create a carbon monoxide hazard. Stay home, stay warm and stay safe.
