If you didn’t file a 2022 tax return, you may still be entitled to a refund. And according to the IRS, more than $1.2 billion in refunds are still unclaimed.

Here’s what you need to know:
• You generally have three years to claim a refund
• For 2022 returns, the deadline is April 15, 2026
• There’s no penalty for filing late if you’re owed money
• But if you miss the deadline, the refund is gone for good

Also, refunds aren’t just about withholding—you could qualify for refundable credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit, which can increase what you’re owed.

One important note: if you haven’t filed more recent returns (2023 or 2024), your refund could be held until you catch up.

Bottom line: if you skipped filing in 2022, it’s worth taking another look. You may be leaving money behind—but the clock is ticking.

Filing your tax return early is a smart financial move. Here’s why:

✅ Faster Refunds
The sooner you file, the sooner you receive your refund. Early filers are processed before peak-season backlogs begin.

✅ Protection Against Tax Identity Theft
Filing early reduces the risk of someone fraudulently submitting a return using your Social Security number.

✅ Less Stress, More Accuracy
Waiting until the deadline increases pressure and the chance of errors. Filing early gives you time to review documents carefully and avoid mistakes.

✅ Better Financial Planning
If you owe taxes, filing early allows you to plan your payment strategy and avoid unnecessary penalties or interest.

Be proactive. File early, stay organized, and start the year with confidence.

(Refund)

Here is some information about why some taxpayers still haven’t received their refunds from the IRS:

The Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act of 2015 requires the IRS to hold refunds for taxpayers claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) until at least mid-February. This law mandates the delay to allow the IRS to detect and prevent tax fraud, ensuring income accuracy before releasing funds.

Key Details Regarding the EITC Hold:

• Effective Date: The IRS cannot release EITC/ACTC refunds before Feb. 15, and typically holds them until mid-February (e.g., Feb. 16–20 in 2026).

• Entire Refund Delayed: The restriction applies to the entire refund, not just the portion directly associated with the EITC, meaning other deductions or credits on the return are also delayed.

• Purpose: The PATH Act provides extra time for the IRS to verify income and social security numbers, particularly to combat identity theft and fraud.

• Impact: Even if a taxpayer files in January, they will not see funds until late February or early March.
