Happy Gotcha Day Luna! 🐶 Three years ago! She’s the best office worker around….if you count getting her hair on every soft service, barking at the clients who visit (until she gets belly rubs), and sleeping on the job as qualifications for employee of the year. She’d win paws down!

When you wait a year or two or three or ten to file your tax return you can lose out on refunds or get penalized with failure to file penalties and interest.

The longer you wait to file also makes it difficult to remember what happened in the year you’re filing. Questions like….

Did you move that year?

Do you have all of the W2s for the jobs you worked?

Or did you take college courses that year?

Start to blur together and can cost you on your tax return.

I hear too many horror stories of people who waited three or four years to file their tax returns without good reason and once in that cycle it’s difficult to get back on track.

Hire a professional to get your return filed every year. Quill & Keyboard Accounting is currently accepting individual and business clients for the 2024 tax filing season.

I usually get a few questions each year about how birth dates affect eligibility for this credit.

You can start to claim your child on your return when they are born in the tax year you’re filing for. For example, your bundle of joy is born on Dec. 31, 2023. Then in no time at all you’re able to claim your child on your 2023 tax return assuming you’re able to get ahold of a social security number for the child before filing (recommended).

But what happens if your baby is born a few days into the new year on Jan. 3, 2024….you’re going to be waiting until 2025 to first claim your child when you file your 2024 tax return.

Similarly, your child ages out of the credit the year they turn 17. Regardless of your child’s birthday during the year, the day they turn 17 makes them ineligible for the child tax credit for the entire year.

Welcome to the headquarters of Quill & Keyboard Accounting 🖋

Dave Dress started the accounting firm some 25 years ago in Arizona before moving to Vermont.

Since then the business has served countless small businesses and tax clients across the country.

Dave brought me on about three years ago, empowering me to find my own clients while he continued to manage his and give me the tools to one day run the business on my own.

With 2022 now upon us, Dave has taken to retirement and I’ve taken over his accounting and tax clients.

The next month will be a whirlwind so please bear with me. I look forward to what the rest of the year holds!

This wonderful sign was custom made by 🥰 I love it!

🎊 Happy New Year! 🎊

Spend the coming weeks reflecting on how you can strengthen systems in your business in 2022.

⭐️ Systems improve efficiency

When you create systems of how your business does things - cook a menu item, serve a drink, onboard new clients - you save time and money. Write this system down. Train your people in the same way to keep the system moving.

⭐️ Systems ensure consistency in the customer experience

You’ll keep your clients and customers happy if they know what to expect and have the same experience time after time. If your business is a high end fashion boutique and you offer your customers champagne 🥂 for their shopping experience you’d do that every time for every customer. It’d come to be something they’d expect that made the experience better.

This one’s the jackpot of systems —->

⭐️ Systems allow you to step away from your business

If your employees know and rely on the systems you’ve created for your business. Guess what? You DON’T have to be in your business 24/7 because the systems will work without you there. Wouldn’t you rather do something else once in awhile without being in your business?

Develop systems in your business this year. Need help? Let’s talk.

Because of the holiday hiatus we have 4 [yes 4 😲] tax tips coming your way. Luna gave her paw for this so you know they’re good.

1. Save for Retirement

⭐️ You aren’t getting any younger! Most retirement contributions are made on a pre tax basis thus saving you tax money now. Money in retirement accounts grows tax free.

2. Give a Gift

⭐️ Annual gifting can be a means of giving your heirs part of their inheritance now so as to reduce your estate’s tax liability.

3. Contribute to a 529 Savings Plan

⭐️ These accounts are relatively easy to set up online as an investment vehicle for higher education (and K-12 education with annual limits). Thirty states offer some sort of incentive for annual contributions.

4. Start an HSA

⭐️ Health savings account are pretty much retirement accounts for your health. The catch with HSAs is enrollment in a high deductible plan.

Advanced child 🍼 tax credit [twelve days of tax tips]

“In late December and early January, the IRS will be sending Letter 6419 to help taxpayers reconcile and receive all of the Child Tax Credits to which they are entitled.

The letter will include the total amount of advance Child Tax Credit payments taxpayers received in 2021 and the number of qualifying children used to calculate the advance payments.

People should keep this and any other IRS letters about advance Child Tax Credit payments with their tax records.”

- IRS Issue number IR-2021-255

Report your cryptocurrency transactions on your tax return [twelve days of tax tips]

In 2014 the IRS began providing guidance on the tax treatment of virtual currency. Since then more and more taxpayers have turned to virtual currency as an investment vehicle. As such the IRS wants to ensure the industry becomes more regulated.

Virtual currency is treated as property for federal income tax purposes.

If you buy and sell cryptocurrency you are likely subject to capital gains and losses.

If you receive cryptocurrency as a form of payment in exchange for performing services, then you might be subject to ordinary income tax or self employment tax.

Be sure to discuss your tax implications and what documentation you’ll need with your tax professional.

Hire a professional 👩🏻‍💻 [twelve days of tax tips]

⭐️ For up-to-date knowledge

As an Enrolled Agent I am required to complete 72 hours of continuing education credits every three years.

⭐️ For tax strategy

A tax professional can help you determine how to reduce your tax bill throughout the year so there will be fewer surprises.

⭐️ To reduce errors

A second set of eyes never hurt especially if you’ve always filed your taxes yourself.

⭐️ To give you peace of mind

In the event the IRS contacts you, your tax professional can help you navigate communication and advocate on your behalf.
