Kay Ivey signed House Bill 527 into law in April 2026, and it brings tax relief for many Alabama workers and families. Here’s what the new law does:

What House Bill 527 Does

1. Overtime Pay Tax Relief

* Alabama workers can deduct up to $1,000 of qualified overtime pay from state income taxes
* Applies to tax years 2026 through 2028
* Designed to reward people working extra hours and increase take-home pay 💰
2. Grocery Tax Suspension 🛒

* Alabama’s 2% state grocery tax will be suspended
* Dates: May 1, 2026 through June 30, 2026
* This temporarily lowers grocery costs statewide

Why This Matters

Think of HB 527 as a two-lane tax relief highway:

🚧 Lane 1: More money in your pocket if you work overtime
🛒 Lane 2: Lower grocery bills for two months

The goal is to help working families deal with inflation and rising costs.

The bill also passed with strong bipartisan support before reaching the governor’s desk, showing broad agreement on tax relief.

Quick Example

If you:

* Work overtime in 2026
* Earn $1,000 in overtime

You could avoid Alabama state income tax on that portion, increasing your net pay.

This is one of the more direct pocketbook bills Alabama has passed recently. Not complicated. Just more take-home pay and cheaper groceries for a short window.

Ghost Preparers
……those who charge for tax services but don’t sign the return. Sniffing out problem preparers isn’t easy for IRS, so it asked taxpayers for help. IRS mailed 10,000 letters to people whose Form 1040s didn’t have a preparer tax ID number or preparer signature. The letters asked recipients who did the returns. Many people replied, and IRS is now contacting those preparers.
IRS’s criminal investigators are pursuing the most egregious preparer cases.
Here are two examples. A ghost preparer who also fabricated deductions and income on her clients’ tax returns was recently sentenced to 22 months in prison and must fork over $541,912 in restitution for her fraudulent actions. Another ghost preparer who also made up income and deductions on client returns was recently sentenced to 46 months in prison and ordered to pay $1,003,631. Both preparers charged clients tax prep fees based on a percentage of the tax refund.
the IRS looks to mail out an additional 12,000,000 more letters within the next couple months.

IRS Phasing Out Paper Tax Refund Checks Starting in Five (5) days!!
Back in late March, the President signed Executive Order 14247 directing the government to terminate paper checks; those going out as well as those coming in. Now IRS released News Release IR-2025-94 which states paper tax refund checks for INDIVIDUALS will be phased out beginning September 30, 2025.
The Release states that approximately 93% of individual income tax refunds are already being direct deposited, so this change affects the remaining 7%. IRS expects options to be available including prepaid debit cards and digital wallets. There may also be limited exceptions allowed for a paper check. IRS will be providing more information as we get closer to the beginning of the next filing season. In the meantime, IRS says to continue filing returns as normal, but those taxpayers that normally receive checks by mail may want to plan ahead.
I have attached the link below so you can read and understand the new changes coming ahead.
