Adili is a word in the Swahili language. It is my closing salutation.

It is defined as "good and honourable conduct; ethics; morals; honest; impartial; just; and righteous". Additionally, you will see the word "Tutaonana" at the end of my posts. It is Swahili for "we will see each other again".

Happy New Year Everyone!!! It's unfortunately been awhile because I was locked out of my facebook account. It's only taken FOREVER to get a work-around so I could find my way back to you, but I'm here now ... LOL. Sooo, moving on to your annual TAX REMINDER:

Tuesday, January 18, 2022 is the due date to pay estimated taxes to the IRS. It is normally due on January 15th, however the 15th is a Saturday and Monday is the Martin Luther King holiday.

Estimated tax payments are for people who earned income where no taxes were withheld, as well as those who tend to (or believe they will) owe taxes. If you live in a state where you pay income taxes, you should also make payments to your state. States may have different due dates but I always recommend that you pay both state and federal estimated taxes.

For questions, please contact me at [email protected] or at (404) 702-5768.

REMINDER: DEADLINE APPROACHING

For those of you who have earned income where no taxes were withheld as well as those who tend to (or believe they will) owe taxes, it is time to pay estimated taxes to the IRS.

Because the 15th falls on the weekend, Monday, September 16th is the due date to pay estimated taxes. If you live in a state where you pay income taxes, you should make payments to them as well. Due dates may vary from state to state, however, I always recommend paying them at the same time.

For questions, please contact me at [email protected] or at (404) 702-5768.

I’m sure you’ve seen one or both of the attached news reports or something similar. I’ve heard from and read about so many people being disappointed in their tax situation this year. While I have my opinions about the pros and cons of the tax changes, the big overall thing that comes to mind is that people didn’t change their perspective along with the tax changes. The last major tax change that would affect so many people occurred decades ago so people have had decades to imagine their taxes within a certain range thus holding on to the same perspective. Before the tax changes were implemented, we heard so much for and against them that it probably got overwhelming and many of us just put a mental block as to the possible outcome.

Anytime time you know of a potential major change in your life including finances, prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Think of 2018 taxes as a reset button to re-strategize:

Many are going to find their mortgage interest is no longer a useful deduction – well think about paying off your home sooner to save on the interest.

Many are going to find their medical costs are no longer useful deductions – where possible, put money into HSA’s or FSA’s and pay medical costs from there.

Many are going to find non-reimbursed employee expenses are no longer useful deductions – where possible, ask employers to reimburse you during the year.

Many are going to find giving to charities is no longer a useful deduction – GIVE ANYWAY!

Hello All,

Here’s a good article for those who want to start off their New Year in improving their financial health because it’s really all related. Much of our physical health can be traced to financial stress. The healthier you are financially, the healthier you are physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

The sections I’m particularly big on are:

Pay Estimated Taxes – I can’t emphasize it enough, if you know you’re not paying enough tax during the year, pay something in estimated taxes. This is not just for the self-employed. Many who are employees under-withhold for different reasons, mostly due to hardship, but if you come into a few extra $ and you know you’re behind in taxes, send the IRS the $. I bet they’ll accept it at any time.

Separate Business Accounts – I stress this so much with my clients. Separate personal and business funds. It’s so important on so many levels. My two best arguments is that it keeps you better organized and is an asset if trying to prove you’re operating as a valid business.

Track Miles – remember you can deduct charitable miles (when you go to donate or volunteer); unreimbursed miles you travel as an employee (does NOT include commuting); miles as a self-employed person (even runs to the post office – little things add up); and miles to medical appointments. You get different amounts based on the type of miles so track separately. There are mileage tracking apps out there.

Record Other Business Expense & Document Everything – The article lists these separately but I feel it’s one-and-the-same. If you document everything, you’ll catch other business expenses you might have overlooked. I’ve begun offering scanning and organizing all of my clients’ documents as an added service as I’ve realized it organizes them, releases that year-end stress of trying to find tax info, and reduces paper. There are apps out there but if you’re too busy, pay someone to do this, but PLEASE only deal with someone who you trust seeing all your personal/private info. It’s an investment in your financial health. It’s like paying more to eat healthy now. You’re going to pay for your health now or later and later will be more expensive because more than likely you’ll be unhealthy.

Wondering how the new tax law impacts you in 2019? There are changes that could impact you in ways you might not expect, so it's best to be prepared. I’m asked a lot about how someone can avoid getting audited. You can’t, but I do inform people about things the IRS views as “Red Flags”. This article discusses some also. I encourage you to read this all the way through.
Remember if you’re paying someone for something and report it as an expense for a business, you should give them a 1099 form at the end of the year (if they aren’t incorporated).

Think about babysitters – if you pay a sitter and put their SS # on your return along with what you paid them, they should report that income on their return.

Hobby vs Business: this is a BIG one. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE be mindful of this. There are people who have never made a profit on a venture they perceive as a business, but the IRS might not. As far as the IRS is concerned, your "business" may only be an expensive hobby,

I’ve not posted in a while. I’m starting my New Year’s Resolution early which is to provide more helpful info not only related to financial health but to anything that will help people gain more knowledge before making a life decision.
This is a helpful article and hits home with me. While I don’t have a gym membership, I am paying for a health app that I’m not using to its full potential. I fear if I give that up, that’ll be the last step in me not making health a priority. I will have a heart-to-heart with myself soon and make a decision. Luckily I don’t struggle with the other items although the fast food one was a recent success. I’ve drastically reduced my fast food intake as part of my journey toward a healthier existence. I still eat fast food but the difference has been noticeable when I sort my expenses by “fast food”.
