Most refunds issued in less than 21 days: EITC refunds for many available by March 3
The easiest way to check a refund's status is by using Where's My Refund? on IRS.gov or the IRS2Go app.

Many factors can affect refund timing after the IRS receives a tax return. Although the IRS issues most refunds in less than 21 days, the IRS cautions taxpayers not to rely on receiving a refund by a certain date, especially when making major purchases or paying bills. Some returns may require additional review and may take longer.

Under the federal Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, the IRS cannot issue Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) refunds before mid-February. Where's My Refund? should show an updated status by February 22 for most early EITC/ACTC filers. The IRS expects most EITC/ACTC related refunds to be available in taxpayer bank accounts or on debit cards by March 3 if they chose direct deposit and there are no other issues with their tax return.

Alabama’s One-time Tax Rebate

You may receive a one-time tax rebate in December 2023
To qualify for the one-time tax rebate, taxpayers must have filed a 2021 Individual Income Tax return which ALDOR received on or before October 17, 2022. Non-residents, estates or trusts, or anyone who was claimed as a dependent during the 2021 tax year do not qualify. Rebates will be issued starting December 1.

Who will receive a tax rebate?
You will receive a tax rebate if…
You filed a 2021 state Individual Income Tax return by October 17, 2022.
You will NOT receive a tax rebate if…
You did not file a 2021 state Individual Income Tax return by October 17, 2022.
You are a nonresident.
You are an estate or trust.
You were claimed as a dependent during the 2021 tax year.
What action should I take to claim my tax rebate?
Qualifying taxpayers do not need to take any action to claim a rebate. Tax rebates will be automatically issued to all qualifying taxpayers.

When will the tax rebates go out?
ALDOR will begin issuing tax rebates on December 1 by direct deposit or paper check. Please allow time for your rebate to be received.

How much will I receive?
The amount of the rebate is based on your 2021 tax year filing status:

$150 for single, head of family, or married filing separate
$300 for married filing joint
Married couples who filed joint 2021 Individual Income Tax returns will receive one rebate for $300.

How will I receive my rebate?
You can expect to receive your rebate based on how you received your 2021 tax year refund, by direct deposit or paper check. If you did not receive a 2021 tax year refund, the rebate can be expected by paper check.

If you received your 2021 refund by direct deposit, ALDOR will use the same bank account to issue your rebate by direct deposit.

Paper checks will be issued if:
You received your 2021 refund by paper check.
Your banking information has since changed.
You received your 2021 refund using a tax preparer’s account.
