A local system is monitored by you. These are camera doorbells or security cameras that send information to your cell phone. You are the only one viewing the footage.

A monitored system is a paid service. You contract with a security company to install and monitor security cameras and sensors. The company notifies you and emergency services when a security breach is detected.
