Sigh. Maryland taxes are complicated.
A quick look at the DMV tax picture:
- Maryland residents pay state income tax (2% to 6.5%) plus a county tax (2% to 4%). Two neighbors earning the same income can owe very different amounts depending on which county they call home.
- For high earners, 2025 brought a top marginal rate of 6.5% and a new 2% capital gains surtax on federal AGI over $350,000.
- Property tax assessments are expected to rise an average of 12% in 2026, though some counties cap increases at 10%.
