If you are wondering how the new tax bill will affect your "qualified tips," read on...

Qualified Tips Deduction
(“No Tax on Tips”)
Individuals can claim an income tax deduction for qualified tips received in tax years 2025 through 2028. A qualified tip is any cash tip received in an occupation which customarily and regularly received tips on or before December 31, 2024. The deduction is limited to $25,000 per tax year, and starts to phase out when modified adjusted gross income is above $150,000 ($300,000 for joint filers). Qualified tips received in the course of a nonemployee individual‘s trade or business are deductible only to the extent that gross receipts are greater than allocable deductions. An employer must report qualified tips on the employee‘s Form W-2, or the employee must report the tips on Form 4137. A service recipient must report qualified tips on the nonemployee payee‘s Form 1099-NEC or Form 1099-K. Amounts that do not meet certain requirements are excluded from qualified tip treatment. The deduction is not allowed unless the taxpayer‘s social security number appears on his or her income tax return. Married taxpayers must file a joint return to claim the deduction.

The IRS is opening tax filing season on January 27, 2025 for tax year 2024 returns. If you haven't done this already, you should consider getting an IP PIN from the IRS. This should prevent a fraudulent return from being filed with your social security number. You can apply for an IP PIN on the IRS website at www.irs.gov . You will need to provide this to your tax preparer, or if you prepare your own return, you will have to enter it before you can electronically file.

Some good news for MA taxpayers! Gov Maura Healey signed into law the first major tax changes in over 20 years! Here are some highlights:

Yesterday, Governor Maura Healey signed the $1 billion tax relief package into law. It will be phased in over multiple years and goes into full effect in fiscal year 2027 (FY27). This package is regarded as the most significant piece of legislation Healey has signed during her time as governor.

Highlights from the legislation include:
• Short-term capital gains: The bill would change the tax rate from the sale of assets held for a year or less from 12% to 8.5%
• Estate tax credit: Language in the bill would eliminate the tax for all estates under $2 million by allowing a uniform credit of $99,600 (retroactive to January 1, 2023)
• Earned Income Tax Credit: The package includes language that would increase the earned income tax credit from 30% to 40% of the federal credit
• Joint Filing Requirement: The bill includes a provision that will require any couple who files a joint federal tax return to also file a joint state tax return
• Chapter 62F: The conference committee language changes the current state law that caps the amount of tax revenue state government can collect and taxpayers’ reimbursement rates – the bill would replace the current language that has a calculation for rebates to an equal payment for every taxpayer if Chapter 62F was triggered again, it would also require married taxpayers who file a joint return with the federal government to file a joint return at the state level

The Internal Revenue Service is warning taxpayers to be on the lookout for a new scam mailing that tries to mislead people into believing they are owed a refund.

The new scheme involves a mailing coming in a cardboard envelope from a delivery service. The enclosed letter includes the IRS masthead and wording that the notice is “in relation to your unclaimed refund.”

Like many scams, the letter includes contact information and a phone number that do not belong to the IRS. But it also seeks a variety of sensitive personal information from taxpayers—including detailed pictures of driver’s licenses—that can be used by identity
thieves to try obtaining a tax refund and other sensitive financial information.

When determining whether to contribute to pretax retirement plans or Roth 401(k) plans, consider the potential impact on Social Security taxes and Medicare premiums. Maintaining a mix of pretax and after-tax accounts can make sense as a way to diversify holdings.
