I just checked into the Carolina Inn in Mount Pleasant North Carolina. i’m pretty sure I passed through a time warp back to 1970. This place is a “Motor Court” where you drive straight up to your room door. The doors have actual keys not key cards. I had to fill out my registration with a pencil. I looked behind the counter and the guy had a OKidata dot matrix printer and old Timey switchboard phone system. This place is legit retro cool!

Are nonprofit entities required to pay North Carolina sales tax on their purchases? Well, the answer is yes and no. While nonprofits are required to pay NC sales tax when they make purchases, they are allowed to make a semi-annual request for a refund of sales tax paid. This is a benefit that many small nonprofits can easily miss. We help nonprofits with bookkeeping, financial statements, payroll and payroll taxes and other issues such as requesting sales tax refunds. If your non profit needs accounting help, we will be happy to review your needs and propose a plan for your financial services.

Today is "New Year's Eve" for many governmental and not for profit entities who have a year end of June 30th. My staff and I will be spending this afternoon and tomorrow morning observing inventory counts for our audits. If you have a non-profit with a June 30th year end and are in need of tax or audit services, we would be happy to review your bookkeeping and give you a quote on your work, but for now HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!!!

Don't forget - May 17th is the filing deadline for personal taxes. If you haven't filed yet, you can ask for an extension to file until October 15th, but the extension must be filed no later than Monday, May 17th. Contact our office if you need any help with your filing needs.

I guess we take the good with the bad. The IRS has declared that the first $10,200 of unemployment benefits received by taxpayers will not be taxable income. North Carolina has not taken this position. All unemployment benefits will still be taxable on your NC tax return. I will keep you updated as this crazy year of ever-changing tax laws keeps rolling along.

Based on the information being released by the IRS, the third round stimulus checks should released this morning. Check your bank balance - you may find a nice surprise!

There may be some good news on the way for taxpayers who received unemployment benefits during 2020. Legislation has been introduced that will make payments of unemployment benefits received up to $10,000 tax free. This has NOT been passed by Congress yet, but there is hope that it and other taxpayer relief measurers may be on the way. I will monitor this and keep you informed.

I have been sharing reasons why a person would choose a CPA firm to handle their tax and financial needs. Today's point regards representation.

Reason 3 - Professional representation:
The IRS chooses a random sample of returns to examine
each year. If your return is chosen for audit, a CPA can
guide you through the process. He is familiar with how
audits work and can communicate with the revenue
agent either by phone, through the mail or with
face-to-face meetings to resolve the audit. You are not
left to deal with these issues alone or with someone
who is unprepared to help. Working with a CPA gives
you piece of mind knowing that you have someone
on your side who understands the process.

Yesterday I began a series listing things to think about when choosing between engaging a CPA for your tax and financial needs or an uncertified tax preparer. Today's item for consideration is access.

Reason 2- Year-round access
Unlike many uncertified tax preparers and accounting
offices, CPA offices remain open all year long, not just
during tax filing season. If you need a question
answered, financial advice, or if you just need copies of
prior year tax returns to give the bank in order to
refinance your home mortgage, you will find the doors
of a CPA office open year round. You have the assurance
that we are here for you when you need us.

People have asked me many times over the years, why they should choose a Certified Public Accounting (CPA) firm rather than an uncertified tax preparer. Over the next few days, I will list several items that you can consider when choosing your tax preparer.

Reason 1- Training and education:
In order to become a CPA, a person must have a four-
year accounting degree and pass a difficult professional
examination which lasts for two and a half days. After
becoming certified, 40 hours of continuing education
must be completed each year in order to stay up to
date on changing accounting standards and tax laws.
Choosing a CPA gives you assurance that your work is
being completed by someone with a proper level of
training.
