Last week we had a visitor from the Bronx-- Greg Jost of the and an amazing partner in the fight for a responsible and just financial system. Today we presented with Greg in support of Stop Taking Our Paychecks, legislation aiming to make sure predatory fintech lenders are subject to New York's 25% usury cap!

There are great organizations including credit unions like ours and others all across the state fighting to make sure our communities have access to fair financial services.

We were very happy to recently be able to make a deposit in a credit union offering critical financial services, especially in communities of color in parts of the south where banks are often not accessible or friendly. Their partner organization Hope Policy Institute also does important work to support an equitable and just economy.

While we try to keep as much of our money local as possible, we also make deposits in other credit unions--and other credit unions have helped Genesee Co-op with deposits. Credit unions are co-operatives who work together--and that work helps support our communities across the country.

This week two Genesee Co-op staff and two board members will be connecting with others from credit unions all over the country at the Inclusiv Credit Unions annual conference.

They will call, send you texts, represent themselves as your credit union, your insurance company, the IRS or your child. Please be EXTREMELY cautious when you share your financial information. You can always come into the credit union for help if you need.

On Tuesday Dan headed to Albany to talk to our legislators about predatory "earned wage access" lenders and support Stop Taking Our Pay, legislation that would subject these lenders to the New York State 25% usury cap just like all other lenders.

We met up with awesome advocates from other organizations including Long Island Progressive Coalition NAACP New Economy Project Western New York Law Center Consumer Reports AARP New York 32BJ SEIU and students from Cornell University

Thanks to Senator Samra Brouk and Assemblymember Steven Raga for co-sponsoring legislation to protect working New Yorkers.

Yesterday we said goodbye to Ben, our Chief Lending Officer after six years, as he heads to his next adventure! Ben will be missed by our team here and many of our members who he helped become homeowners, save money by refinancing their cars, and build renewable energy systems on their homes.

Happy birthday to our beloved long-time board member and credit union hero Eric Fairchild who you may have seen around the credit union improving our facilities himself or helping others as our facilities manager, in addition to his role as board member. For many years Eric has been a big part of what makes Genesee Co-op great- thank you Eric!
