Delayed IRS Withdrawals May Not Trigger Penalties

We’ve received multiple reports that electronic funds withdrawals submitted with timely-filed returns were not debited by April 15, with some payments not processed until April 28 or 29 (or still not processed today).

Based on confirmation from the IRS Stakeholder Liaison office, if a payment was scheduled for a timely withdrawal, taxpayers generally should not face late payment penalties, even if the IRS processes the debit after April 15. High filing-season volume, particularly around the April deadline, can delay processing as the IRS works through a large volume of transactions. In many cases, funds are not withdrawn until the return finishes processing. A delay in withdrawal does not necessarily indicate a late payment.

Tax professionals should monitor the client’s account transcript and allow time for the payment to post. If the withdrawal has not occurred after three weeks, continue tracking the status and consider contacting the IRS if concerns remain.

Smart Retirement Tip:
After you retire, your income often drops—especially before Social Security or required minimum distributions kick in. That’s the perfect time to consider a Roth IRA conversion.
Here’s why:
✅ You can pay taxes now at a lower rate
✅ Reduce future RMDs (Roth IRAs don’t have them)
✅ Create a tax-free income source for later years
The goal is simple: convert just enough each year to fill your lower tax brackets—so you save on taxes now and later.

🚗💼 Wrapped Car = 100% Deductible? Not Quite!
Edna & Stacy of E&C, LLC wrapped their Subaru Forester with ads for their biz—but that doesn’t make all mileage deductible. ❌
Even with a full vehicle wrap, business vs. personal use must still be tracked (think mileage logs or apps). ✅
Good news: the cost of the wrap itself is deductible as advertising under §162—design, install, removal and all!

📢 Tax Tip Thursday | 💼✨ Self-Employed? Read This Before Donating!

If you're a sole proprietor or single-member LLC, you might wonder:
"Can I deduct charitable donations as a business expense?" 🤔

🚫 Short answer: No.
Charitable giving, while generous and impactful, isn't considered an "ordinary and necessary" business expense by the IRS—so it can’t be deducted on your Schedule C.

✅ BUT don’t worry!
If you itemize deductions on your personal return, you may still be able to claim those contributions on Schedule A (if given to a qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofit).

💡 PRO TIP: If your business sponsors a charity event and receives advertising or promotion in return (like your logo on a banner), that portion might qualify as a marketing expense. Ask your tax pro before you file!

📂 Stay smart. Stay compliant. And always ask before you deduct!

Tax Pros Urged to Help Clients Set Up IRS Online Accounts

As the tax season gets into full swing, concerns are mounting over potential staffing cuts and other changes at the IRS impacting service levels for tax professionals and taxpayers alike. While employees who are critical for the 2025 filing season are not projected to be part of the recently announced federal employee buyout, tax professionals are strongly encouraged to advise their clients to establish IRS online accounts to help streamline interactions with the agency and avoid delays.

The IRS online account platform allows taxpayers to access a range of critical services, including:

Viewing tax balances and payment history
Accessing transcripts for prior years' tax returns
Receiving notifications of any tax-related issues
Setting up payment plans or managing direct deposits for refunds
Benefits of Online Accounts

For taxpayers, an online account provides a convenient, self-service option to manage tax obligations without relying on long wait times for IRS phone or in-person support. Tax professionals also benefit by having clients who can access key documents and information quickly, allowing for more efficient tax preparation and issue resolution.

"With staffing constraints at the IRS, delays in correspondence and support are inevitable," said Scott Artman, Chief Executive Officer of NATP. "Encouraging taxpayers to establish online accounts now can significantly mitigate these delays and ensure a smoother tax filing process."

How Tax Professionals Can Help

Tax professionals are critical in educating clients about the benefits of IRS online accounts and guiding them through the setup process. Steps for clients include:

Visiting the official IRS website at www.irs.gov/account
Creating an ID.me account or verifying their identity through an existing login
Securing their account with two-factor authentication for added protection
Taxpayers should be reminded to use secure internet connections and avoid public Wi-Fi when accessing sensitive financial information, ensuring they feel secure and protected.

Preparation Is Key

With the IRS's potentially limited resources, preparation is key for both tax professionals and their clients. By acting now, taxpayers can take control of their tax matters, reduce the risk of service disruptions, and ensure timely compliance with filing requirements, providing a sense of relief and reducing stress.

Scammers have been spreading misinformation through ads and social media posts about a supposed Self Employment Tax Credit, which they claim people can use to get massive IRS refunds. In reality, no such credit even exists. The scammers charge fees to prepare tax returns, on which they actually file bogus claims for the specialized Credit for Sick and Family Leave, which was only available for 2020 and 2021.

In reality, only a small number of self-employed people who experienced very specific COVID-related circumstances qualify for the Credit for Sick and Family Leave. IRS personnel flag suspicious credit claims for investigation. In the end, people who get lured in by these scammers have to repay their tax refunds, with penalties and interest charges added. Meanwhile, the scammers disappear with the fees they collect to file false tax returns. Remember, if a tax credit or tax refund claim sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
