This is a modern day parable . . . . How many churches are courageous enough to preach it ? Perhaps it must be shared by individuals one at a time! There was only one student who put the fish back in the of the Bowl . Respecting life!

There is a story that goes viral every now and then about a teacher who took a gold fish out of its bowl and left a classroom of children as it flopped around. Before he left he told them that if anyone dared leave their seat, they would be expelled.
All of the children sat frozen, watching as the fish flopped around, gasping for air.
No one wanted to get up. No one wanted to get in trouble.
Finally, a boy sprang up from his seat and ran to the fish, placing it back in the bowl.
Ultimately, he was the only one who refused to watch the fish die.
When the teacher returned, he told the class that this was the lesson.
That the fear of getting in trouble should never stop you from doing what is right.
That sometimes you may have to oppose authority or group think, or what your valued collective is telling you is "good", simply because it's the right thing to do.

Good message to reflect upon as 2022 becomes history and the New Year grows to become our reality. . . Use it well and enjoy its fragrance ,joy and possibilities 🎈

2022 was a hard year for a lot of people, and the advent of 2023 will do nothing to change that fact. But for a couple of millennia, that midnight tick of the cosmic clock has given us a ritual moment to imagine the possibility of rebirth for ourselves and our world. That’s why, from the ancient Greeks onward, a baby (sometimes wrapped in a New Year banner) has served as a symbol of resurgent hope.

No matter how world-weary I may be, spending time with infants or young children always rekindles my spirit. In this treasured photo, my granddaughter Naiya takes me to the growing edge of her world by explaining one of its many mysteries. Her eyes are wide with wonder, her hands alive with speech, and her expression says, “Grandpa, I'm going to keep talking until you get it!” (FYI, the topic was important: little-known facts about turtles.)

I’m following Naiya intently for many reasons: I love her, every child deserves respectful attention, and kids remind me that the world is full of wonders that jaded eyes will never see. The burdens of adulthood are real, but they are not the whole of reality, not by a long shot. Only by seeing the world steady and seeing it whole can we create a reality that will serve our kids well.

So I'm heading into 2023 with an aspiration to “get it” by looking at life thru the eyes of a child—while using my grown-up awareness and power to do whatever good I can. Buddhists call it "beginner's mind,” a vital corrective to the cynicism that comes when we allow harsh realities to darken our imaginations and diminish our energies. It's a way of looking at the world that makes fresh starts possible at home, at work, and in politics.

As we move into the New Year, I’ll be reflecting on what Howard Thurman calls “the growing edge” of my life. What is yours? Whatever it is, may 2023 be a year in which we grown-ups find new life in ourselves to help make a world fit for the children as well as ourselves. In that spirit I wish you and yours a truly Happy New Year!
