Richmond Accounting Department

Richmond Accounting Department The Accounting department attempts to work with each student as an individual.

While pursuing an accounting degree at UR, students are taught to understand accounting and its many complexities rather than being forced to memorize purely mechanical procedures. Class sizes are small and interactions between faculty and students are commonplace. While fulfilling the program's basic requirements, students can tailor their course work to individual interests.

Just to make everyone nostalgic, today is the second day of final exams. One junior just mentioned that he has the Intermediate Accounting II final exam this morning and the Cost Accounting final exam this afternoon. Seven hours of testing in one day. Keep that in mind the next time you say to yourself, "I sure wish I was back in college."

The Accounting Department is so EXCITED! Prof Sadler, Prof Austin, and Prof Geiger are going to represent the RSB Accounting Department at this weekend's Relay for Life event on the University of Richmond campus. That includes SEVERAL hours of walking (and fun!), all for a GREAT cause. If you'd like to show your support - come out to the event and cheer us on, or you can donate to this great cause (link below). All funds raised go directly to American Cancer Society. For more information or to help participate, contact Dr. Ashley Austin at [email protected].

When Professor Hoyle ended his third class of the day this afternoon, it marked the end of his 50th year as a classroom teacher. When asked to comment, he merely said, "Only 10 more years and I'll hit 60 years in the classroom. I can do the math." He did write this essay to talk about the teaching philosophy that he has developed over those five decades, a philosophy that has been experienced by quite a number of Richmond accounting students over the years.

This is the 300 th essay on teaching that I have written for this blog. Thanks so much to everyone who has consistently read my thoughts...

After 13 years as the chair of the accounting department, Dr. Darrell Walden is stepping down from that duty. He will remain on the faculty after the end of the current semester but will no longer be chair. Last Friday, the Accounting faculty gave Dr. Walden a lovely office lamp (with a U of R log) and a gift card to the Greenbrier in appreciation for his leadership and friendship.

Exciting news from the Dean of the Robins School of Business: As we continue to reflect on the life of our friend and colleague, I want to share with you that one of the two teaching fellows at the Robins School will now be named the Paul Clikeman Teaching Fellow. This naming is made possible by the establishment of an endowment through the generous support of Cindy and Larry Borger and the Davenport Family Foundation. Cindy and Larry got to know the Clikemans as they cheered their children on during countless cross-country running competitions. They greatly admired Paul’s commitment and dedication to his students and wanted to find a way to honor and memorialize his impact. I can’t think of a more fitting tribute to Paul’s legacy.

We are now ready to seek nominations for two new teaching fellows, the Robins School Teaching Fellow and the Paul Clikeman Teaching Fellow. The Teaching Fellows will be installed in Fall 2021 during a special event at which they will each deliver a talk on teaching that incorporates their personal teaching philosophy. The Fellows will be expected to mentor junior faculty in teaching and will be asked to provide at least one seminar on pedagogy each year. This seminar will be open to faculty across the University. In addition, each Fellow will facilitate a New Faculty Orientation program on teaching Robins School students.

Wonderful story in today's Richmond Times Dispatch about Megan Gianforte, an accounting major at Richmond who plays on the women's lacrosse team.

As an intern, she was part of teams that investigated wire fraud, bank fraud, and health-care fraud. She also took part in SWAT team training, and visited the fi****ms range.

Here is a video that the Accounting Department made for the first and second-year students to help them in their decision as to whether to major in accounting. It can be a difficult decision and we wanted them to have all the information they might need.

So you want to be an accounting major? Here's everything you need to know. Contact Joe Hoyle at [email protected] or Keith Webb, [email protected], for d...

This lovely poster of "Call to Action", the book authored by Dr. Paul Clikeman was hung a few days ago outside the boardroom on the third floor of the Robins School of Business. Dr. Clikeman passed away suddenly two months ago and we still miss him greatly.

There will be a private memorial service for Dr. Paul Clikeman at his church at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 30. It should last approximately 30 minutes. The service will be live streamed, and everyone is invited to share in the memories of Dr. Clikeman. If possible, can you share this information with anyone who might be interested in virtually attending the service. You might want to check in early. I understand there might be a slideshow of photos of Dr. Clikeman before the service.

Here is what the church has indicated:

The easiest way to join is to to to the website link: www.Redeemerric.org/PClikeman.

The site is already up and running and the live stream will be added on Monday morning.

We will all meet there virtually to celebrate the life of a truly good human being.
