As we near the end of 2023, here is a reminder to review your current annual contribution to your retirement plan and maximize your savings.

2023 Contribution Limits:

Traditional & Roth 401k - Up to $22,500 a year ($30k for those over 50)

Traditional & Roth IRAs - Up to $6,500 a year ($7500 for those over 50)

Simple IRA - Up to 15,500 a year ($19,000 for those over 50)

SEP IRA - Up to $66,000 a year or 25% of compensation (the lesser of these options)

A slight contribution increase may have a significant impact on your retirement savings. I love seeing contribution limits get raised because the ability to invest more money earlier on means that compound growth has more time to work its magic on your invested capital.

As the festive season approaches, it's time to get ready for some joyful celebrations without breaking the bank. Here are my top tips for smart holiday spending that'll keep your budget in check.

🎄Set a Budget: Before you start shopping, decide on a realistic budget. Allocate amounts for gifts, decorations, food, and any other holiday-related expenses. This will help you stay on track and avoid overspending.

🎄Make a List (and Check it Twice!): Jot down the names of everyone you're buying gifts for. Having a list prevents impulse buying and ensures you don't forget anyone important.

🎄Thoughtful Gifting: It's not about the price tag; it's the thought that counts! Consider meaningful, homemade, or personalized gifts that show you care without straining your wallet. You can also pick your favorite, local charity and make contributions in their name.

🎄Start Early: Don't wait until the last minute to shop. Starting early gives you time to find deals, compare prices, and make thoughtful choices without the pressure.

🎄Track Your Spending: Use budgeting apps or spreadsheets to track your holiday expenses. This will help you see where your money is going and adjust if needed.

🎄Avoid Impulse Buys: When you're out shopping, pause before making a purchase. Ask yourself if it's really necessary and if it fits within your budget.

🎄 Celebrate Meaningfully: Remember, the holidays are about spending time with loved ones, creating memories, and sharing joy. Focus on the experiences, traditions, and moments that truly matter.

Let's make this holiday season magical without the stress of overspending. Share your own budget-friendly tips in the comments below and spread the wisdom! 🎁💬

ICYMI, federal student loan payments, which have been paused since March of 2020, resume back in October. For many borrowers, making room in their budgets is going to have a big impact on their finances. (Hint: Monthly payments can vary from $200 to $300+ on average.) Balances started accruing interest at the beginning of September, so now is a good time to come up with a game plan for tackling your payments.

🎓Enroll in the right plan. Borrowers are eligible for the standard 10-year repayment plan, but there are other options, like the SAVE plan or PAYE plan. Use the fed gov’s student loan simulator to see which one is best for you.

🎓Start paying ASAP. If you can, get ahead of your payments. Paying sooner rather than later means you’ll pay less in interest when all’s said and done. Especially if you have direct loans, because that interest compounds daily.

🎓Get short-term relief. If you’re in a tough spot, options like deferment or forbearance can pause or reduce your monthly payment. But know that you might still be racking up interest. Plus, these periods don’t typically count toward student loan forgiveness requirements.
