Half of this job is knowing which phone number to call.

I had a California case where the entire outcome came down to reaching the right unit at the Franchise Tax Board and getting a real person on the line the same day.

That is not a trick and it is not leverage. That is just knowing the map.

Most people burn weeks on hold, get transferred four times, explain their whole situation to somebody with no authority to change anything, and walk away believing the system is impossible.

The system is not impossible. It is just built so that not knowing costs you.
Every option that exists for you already exists today. Offers. Agreements. Hardship. Penalty relief. Nobody is going to call and offer them to you.

You have to know they are there, and you have to ask for them correctly.
Start by learning how the machine actually works.

The first case file is open.

THE TAX UNDERWORLD, Issue #1: The Vulture Strikes at Night is out today.

The full digital issue is free.

Denise finishes a twelve-hour shift and stops for gas.

Card declined.

She checks her account.

Frozen.

To her it feels sudden.

It was not.

The notices had been stacking in a drawer for weeks. The Bank Levy Vulture (an IRS bank levy) had been circling the whole time.

I made this comic because tax trouble is invisible until it hits something you cannot ignore. A bank account. A paycheck. A business. A family.

Nobody reads a forty-page guide on levies at eleven at night. A comic, they read.

The client is the main character. I am the detective working the case and throwing the rope.

Ben Settle's work on business World-Building gave me the framework for pulling the Tax Debt Detective, the villains, and the case files into one connected world.

This is Issue #1. It is not the last.

The physical edition is coming, including a Founder's First Printing limited to 100 signed and hand-numbered copies.

Nobody is working your file right now.

The clock is.

Penalties calculate on schedule. Interest compounds on schedule. Neither one needs a human being to sign off on anything.

You can go 14 months without hearing a word and still owe thousands more than you did when the silence started.

Quiet is not the same as safe.

Quiet is just the sound of the meter running. โณ

Real question. What are you actually protecting?

Everyone who sits down with me is protecting something, and it is almost never the thing they say first.

Some people are protecting a house.
Some are protecting a business they spent 20 years building.
Some are protecting a professional license.
Some are protecting a marriage that cannot take one more surprise.

I had a client give up retirement savings to keep her name off a public record. On paper that made no sense. To her it made all the sense in the world.

You cannot build a strategy until you know which one is yours. The plan that saves a house is not the same plan that protects a license or keeps your standing with your bank.

So take a second and answer it honestly. What is the thing you are really trying to keep?

Tell me in the comments. I read them.

It doesnโ€™t break down your door.

It waits for you to stop opening the mail.

For more than 20 years, Iโ€™ve worked inside the world most people never see until tax trouble turns serious.

Now Iโ€™ve turned that world into a comic book.

THE TAX UNDERWORLD
ISSUE #1: THE VULTURE STRIKES AT NIGHT

My first original comic.

Coming soon.

And this is only the beginning.

I was standing in line at Staples last week, returning something to Amazon.

The woman in front of me had thirteen pieces of clothing to return.

One by one, the employee scanned them. Shirt. Pants. Another shirt. Even the guy behind the counter started rolling his eyes.

So was the woman standing in front of me.

Finally she finished. I figured we were moving.

Nope. The woman who'd been rolling her eyes stepped up and pulled out fifteen more pieces of clothing from her own bag.

The serial returner was judging another serial returner. Felt like a Seinfeld episode.

But standing there I realized I see a version of this constantly with tax problems. People hire someone. Stop. Try something else. Stop. Call one of those radio ad companies. Stop. Ignore the IRS for six months. Start over.

The IRS isn't Amazon. There's no return label.

That's the kind of thing I've started writing about every week, real moments from my own life that turn into a lesson about what I see with tax debt every day. Not lectures. Just what's true.

If you want them in your inbox, go to CallTaxEA.com or call 909-570-1103 and get on the list.

A foreign athlete can play one match on US soil, fly home a week later, and still owe the IRS 30 percent off the top.

Not 30 percent of the profit. 30 percent of the gross, before a single expense comes out.

They do not live here. They do not vote here. They were here for a month.
Does not matter. The IRS taxes where the money was made.

And the cities want their piece too. Play a game in Philadelphia and you owe Philadelphia. There is a tax for exactly that.

One state looked at a championship payout, realized most of it would be paid out after the athletes had already left the country, and floated the idea of collecting on the field before the players got their money. They dropped it. Not because it was too aggressive. Because it was too impractical.

Sit with that for a second.

That system reaches across an ocean for someone who was here four weeks. And you have been telling yourself your balance is small enough to slip through.

The difference between you and them is not size. It is that they had someone handling it before the whistle blew.

You still can.

"Maybe they will just forget about me."

I have heard that from people who owed $12,000 and from people who owed $600,000.

The system does not forget. It does not lose your address. It does not decide your balance is too small to bother with.

It is automated. Automation is not merciful and it is not lazy.
The only people who stay stuck are the ones who decided the machine would somehow skip them.

It has never skipped anyone.

The scariest thing that can happen to your IRS file isn't enforcement.
It is a mistake nobody catches.

Someone who has checked out opens your account. Applies a payment to the wrong year. Puts a hold where it does not belong. Enters a code that says you owe something you do not.

The person who used to catch that may have been one of the ones who just left.
So it posts. And now it is real. And now it is your job to prove it is wrong, to a system that cannot tell you who did it or when.

I have unwound these. It takes transcripts. It takes documentation. It takes knowing which department actually has the authority to fix it.

What it does not take is waiting and hoping somebody notices.
If the balance they say you owe does not match your math, that gap is not going to close on its own.

Ray kept a spreadsheet in a drawer he didn't like to open.

One California tax balance. 18 years old.

His plan was simple. California gets 20 years to collect, then the debt dies. So Ray waited. Two more years and he'd be free.

What Ray didn't know: back in year 11, the state filed a lien and added a small fee to his account. A few hundred dollars. He never opened the notice.

That fee restarted his 20-year clock. From zero.

The man who thought he had 2 years left had 13.

Andrew and I just broke this whole thing down on the new episode of Tax Debt Live:

Why California's collection clock has a reset button (and the IRS's doesn't)

Why every payment on an FTB installment agreement buys the state another month to collect

The client who told me his California debt was "handled" right before the FTB pulled six figures out of his bank account

Plus my dog Bruno's Hollywood debut in our new short film about CaliClaw. Watch it and grade his performance in the comments. He's sensitive, but he can take it.

Full episode: https://youtu.be/Mvf3NzpscgA

If you owe California and your whole plan is waiting, watch this before you waste another year. And if the state is already moving on you, call me at 909-570-1103 or go to CallTaxEA.com. I've sat on your side of this table. I know the way out.
