💳 South Dakota business owners: Do you charge customers a fee for paying by credit card?

Here’s a detail that’s easy to miss: If the product or service you’re selling is subject to South Dakota sales tax, the credit card fee you charge the customer is taxable, too!

That fee is part of your taxable gross receipts—even if you list it separately on the invoice.

📊 Example:
$100 taxable sale + $3 credit card fee = $103 subject to sales tax.

Take a moment to check your invoicing or checkout settings. Adding the fee doesn’t always mean your software is calculating sales tax on it correctly!

Small details can make a big difference in your books. 💛

“My business is profitable—so why is there no money in the bank?” 🤔

Because profit and cash flow are not the same thing.

📊 Profit measures how your business performed over a period of time.

💵 Cash flow shows when money actually enters and leaves your bank account.

Your business can report a profit while cash is tied up in:

• Unpaid customer invoices
• Inventory
• Equipment purchases
• Loan principal payments
• Owner withdrawals

Meanwhile, payroll, vendors, taxes, and other bills still need to be paid.

Profit tells you whether your business model is working. Cash flow tells you whether you have the money available when you need it.

A healthy business needs to monitor both. That’s where good bookkeeping—and a little advisory support—can make all the difference.

Did you know approximately half of small businesses make it to the five-year mark—and only about one-third reach 10 years?

Business longevity takes more than making sales. It requires understanding:

📊 Whether you’re actually profitable
💵 How much cash is available
📈 Which areas are growing
💸 Where money is being lost
🧾 What your business owes

You don’t have to know everything about accounting—but you do need accurate numbers and trusted professionals who can help you understand them.

Good bookkeeping cannot guarantee success, but it can help you spot problems sooner, make informed decisions, and build a stronger business.

Your business deserves more than survival mode. Let’s help it thrive! 💚

Your business account is not your personal wallet. 😬

Mixing personal and business spending may seem harmless, but it can quickly create:

❌ Inaccurate financial reports
❌ Missed business deductions
❌ Personal expenses recorded as business expenses
❌ Extra bookkeeping cleanup
❌ Questions from your tax professional

Keep separate bank accounts and credit cards for your business. If a personal purchase accidentally slips through, identify it right away so it can be recorded correctly.

Clear separation creates cleaner books—and cleaner books help you understand how your business is actually performing.

Your grocery run and your business supplies deserve separate receipts.

QuickBooks can categorize it. That doesn’t mean it categorized it correctly. 😬

QuickBooks is a helpful tool, but it doesn’t always understand the story behind a transaction.

Was that hardware-store purchase:

🔨 A repair expense?
📦 Job materials?
🛠️ A new piece of equipment?
🏠 Or something personal?

The wrong category can affect your profit, job costs, balance sheet, and the information sent to your tax professional.

Automation can save time—but it still needs a knowledgeable human reviewing the details.

QuickBooks is the tool. Your bookkeeper is the one who helps make sense of it. 💚

Here’s to the women building businesses, leading teams, chasing dreams, and reheating the same cup of coffee three times. 🙋‍♀️

As the owner of Let’s Make Cents Bookkeeping, I know owning a business takes courage, a whole lot of learning, and occasionally saying, “I can figure this out,” before you actually know how. 😂

To my fellow businesswomen: your hard work deserves to be celebrated, even on the days your to-do list is longer than your patience.

📊 Is your balance sheet buyer—or banker—ready?

Many business owners focus only on the profit and loss statement, but your balance sheet is just as important. It shows what your business owns, what it owes, and the equity you’ve built.

If you’re applying for financing or preparing to sell your business, a banker or potential buyer may examine items such as:

✅ Cash and accounts receivable
✅ Inventory and fixed assets
✅ Credit cards and loans
✅ Accounts payable
✅ Owner equity

Old balances, unreconciled accounts, negative assets, and missing liabilities can raise questions—even when your business is profitable.

Don’t wait until someone requests your financials to discover your balance sheet needs attention. Let’s get your books buyer and banker ready! 💚

Want to know something I genuinely love doing? 🤓

Filing sales tax returns, handling contractors’ excise tax, and figuring out use tax!

I know—that may not sound exciting to everyone. But I love digging into the details, making sure everything is reported correctly, and helping business owners stay compliant without the stress.

If sales tax, excise tax, or use tax makes your head spin, let me handle it. You focus on running your business, and I’ll happily make sense of the cents! 💚

🚀 Starting a business costs more than the inventory you plan to sell!

The SBA recommends identifying both your one-time startup costs and your ongoing monthly expenses before opening your doors.

Licenses, insurance, equipment, marketing, software, professional fees, payroll, and working capital can add up quickly.

A great idea starts the business. A realistic budget helps keep it open. 💚
