Drowning in bank statements, tax returns, and W-2s? You don't have to gather everything you own.

When your attorney requests financial documents, hand over exactly what they ask for. Nothing more.

A Certified Divorce Financial Analyst®️ (CDFA®️) helps you figure out which papers actually matter for your case, so you're not digging through files that lead nowhere.

The result: less time wasted, less running around, and a smaller bill from your attorney.

Why pay your lawyer to sort through documents you never needed to pull?

Talk to a CDFA® and keep things moving without the extra costs piling up.

One of our clients nearly handed over $150K in taxes by swapping her retirement account for the house.

Her lawyer called it an even split, but he overlooked the tax bill buried inside it. 😳

For about $5K, she got the right read on the numbers and kept a huge chunk of her money.

If you're dividing assets in a divorce, don't just take "it's fair" at face value.

💥 Taxes can quietly wreck a settlement that looks balanced on paper.

One small sentence in your divorce agreement can spare you a world of trouble down the road.

Every divorce mediation agreement should include this line:

"If either party disagrees in the future, they agree to return to mediation to settle the dispute."

So why does it matter?

Picture this a few years from now. If one person stops following the agreement, that single sentence means you can settle it through mediation instead of
dragging it back into court.

Leave it out, and a small disagreement can balloon into a costly legal battle.

Want to walk into your agreement ready for whatever comes next?

Divorce decisions don't just settle the present.

They shape the next five years.

Most people brace for the dramatic battles. More often, it's the quiet financial calls made along the way that decide who lands on solid ground. Five worth getting right:

1️⃣ Your attorney and a CDFA® play different positions. One protects your legal rights; the other models the numbers behind them.

2️⃣ Spousal support is usually a bridge, not a destination, so plan for the day it changes.

3️⃣ Settlements move on documentation, not labels. Build the paper trail first.

4️⃣ Keep the family home only if the numbers keep working.

5️⃣ Bring in specialists at the right moment, not the earliest one.

Save it for when you need it

Most alimony talks get stuck on a single number.

A step-down plan takes a different approach: start higher, then lower the payments step by step over time.

The larger amount early gives one person room to stabilize. The smaller amount later makes it easier for the other to agree.

Same support, just structured to work for both sides.

A Certified Divorce Financial Analyst® can show what a step-down could look like.

Nobody walks into divorce planning to mess this up, but these happen all the time.

Divorce is already hard enough. These 5 missteps can quietly drain your time, energy, and money before you even notice.

1️⃣ Assuming your lawyer has your finances covered. They're there for the legal side, not your budget, your goals, or your life after the divorce.

2️⃣ Counting on alimony to last forever. It's usually temporary. You always need a Plan B.

3️⃣ Calling your ex a narcissist without proof. Without a real diagnosis, this can weaken your case instead of helping it.

4️⃣ Holding onto a house you can't actually afford. If the math doesn't add up, letting go may be the smarter move.

5️⃣ Bringing in a forensic accountant too early. It's expensive, and it may not give you the answers you're hoping for.

These aren't the only ones, either.

Did you know there's a little-known loophole that could help you keep your home after divorce? 🏡

If you're worried about qualifying for a new mortgage or refinancing after a divorce, here's something most people don’t know:

The Garn-St. Germain Depository Institutions Act of 1982 might work in your favor.

💡 This law says that when a home is transferred from one spouse to another after divorce, the mortgage company can’t force you to refinance or assume the loan in your own name.

That means you could keep making payments on the existing mortgage—without the stress of requalifying.

Of course, this isn’t one-size-fits-all, and you’ll want to check with a professional.

A Certified Divorce Financial Analyst® (CDFA®) can help you figure out if this applies to your situation.

Going through a divorce and not sure what to do with the house?

You’ve got 3 options, but each one has its own challenges:

✅ Keep the house – One person stays and takes over the mortgage. Sounds simple, but you’ll need to refinance and get the deed in your name. That can be hard if money’s tight.

✅ Sell it and split the cash – This is usually the easiest and cleanest way, and honestly, it’s what most judges will suggest if you can’t agree.

⚠️ Own it together after the divorce – Some people try this, but it can go wrong fast. You have to be super clear on who pays the mortgage, the repairs, and what happens if someone doesn’t follow through.

Many people make expensive mistakes when dealing with the house, and once the papers are signed, it’s hard to fix.

Don't Fight for the Marital Home if it Doesn't Work for You!

When going through a divorce, it’s easy to get caught up in the emotions tied to your home—the memories, the comfort, the history.

This is especially true for many women (no offense, ladies), as I’ve seen time and time again.

We hold onto the idea that keeping the house is the best option for us and our kids.

But let me ask you: Is it really?

Staying in the home may not only drain you financially, but it could also impact the kids.

Maybe it's better to start fresh somewhere new, away from the reminders of the past.

Sometimes, a new environment is exactly what you and your children need to thrive.

Need guidance on navigating this decision?

Don’t hesitate to reach out to a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst® (CDFA®) for personalized advice.
