April 15 is the tax filing deadline, and it's also when Q1 estimated taxes are due.

If you're self-employed or a business owner, the IRS expects you to pay taxes throughout the year (quarterly).

Quick tax tip ▶️ Look into something called the safe harbor rule! If you pay at least 100% of last year's tax bill (or 110% if you made over $150K), you're protected from underpayment penalties.

2026 quarterly dates to mark:
- Q1 (January–March) due April 15
- Q2 (April–May) due June 15
- Q3 (June–August) due September 15
- Q4 (September–December) due January 15, 2027

Tax credits vs. tax deductions

Both can lower your tax bill, but they work in different ways.

Credit ➡️ An amount you subtract from the tax you owe. This can lower your tax payment, or increase your refund. Some credits are refundable and can give you money back even if you don't owe any tax.

Deduction ➡️ An amount you subtract from your income when you file so you don’t pay tax on it. By lowering your income, deductions lower your tax (keep your receipts and records!).

Generally, credits will save you more, but deductions do add up, especially if you're putting money into an HSA, IRA, or 401(k), or paying off student loans.

Personal-finance company WalletHub has released its 2026 Tax Burden by State report. ranks 35th overall in the nation, with a total tax burden of 7.81% of personal income, broken down into 1.92% for property taxes, 2.49% for income taxes, and 3.41% for sales and excise taxes.

April 15 is coming soon!

Three ways to get an IRS extension until October 15:
▶️ Pay online and check the box
▶️ Use Free File
▶️ Request an extension by mail using Form 4868

A few things to note:
- An extension gives you more time to file, but it does not give you more time to pay. If you owe, interest and penalties start April 16 regardless.
- If you can't pay the full amount, you should still file. The failure-to-file penalty is significantly steeper than the failure-to-pay penalty.
- If your situation is complicated, new business, side income, investments, crypto, etc., a professional set of eyes is worth it.
