GWCPA Helping family businesses through succession without losing your family or your business

Trying to reach everyone limits growth.

In this episode of The Art of Succession Podcast, host Barrett Young, CPA, a Tax and Marketing Partner at GWCPA, shares the strategic thinking behind refining the podcast’s direction, defining the right audience, and creating a dedicated platform focused entirely on succession conversations.

Growth isn't always about doing more.

Sometimes it's about getting more specific.

The biggest challenge for many brands isn't creating content.

It's knowing exactly who they're speaking to.

When your audience is unclear, your message becomes diluted.

When your audience is defined, every piece of content works harder.

The strongest platforms aren't built for everyone.

They're built for the people who need them most.

Focused communication creates stronger trust, stronger engagement, and stronger results.

Cash flow discipline builds lasting companies.

In this episode of The Art of Succession Podcast, host Barrett Young, CPA invites Bob Labbe, Owner and Partner at Ultimate Coaster Co., to explore the realities of scaling, cash flow discipline, and sustainable growth.

Most businesses don’t fail from lack of opportunity.

They fail from overcommitment. Hiring too early.

Spending before revenue is secured.

Scaling based on hope instead of certainty.

The smartest operators do the opposite.

They build lean. They wait for the order.

Then they scale-fast and precisely.

Because growth isn’t about being ready for everything.

It’s about being ready at the right time.

Cash flow isn’t just a metric. It’s survival. Stay on the right side of it.

Clarity in roles creates unstoppable teams.

In this episode of The Art of Succession Podcast, host Barrett Young, CPA invites Bob Labbe, Owner and Partner at Ultimate Coaster Co., to explore how complementary partnerships drive business success and long-term growth.

Most partnerships fail for one reason: Overlapping strengths.

Too many leaders fighting for the same lane.

Not enough ownership where it matters.

The real advantage? Clear division of responsibility.

One owns the front end. One owns the back end. Both own the outcome.

And here’s where it gets powerful.

The best partners don’t stay in their lane forever.

They learn from each other. They sharpen each other. They evolve together.

That’s how good partnerships become great ones.

You’re never too old to build again.

In this episode of The Art of Succession Podcast, host Barrett Young, CPA invites Bob Labbe, Owner and Partner at Ultimate Coaster Co., to explore entrepreneurship, succession, innovation, and building a life driven by problem-solving passion.

Most people chase retirement.

But what happens when you never felt like you worked in the first place?

That’s the difference between building a career and living your calling.

Real entrepreneurs don’t stop creating.

They just change the problems they choose to solve.

From scaling companies to engineering better golf performance… to reinventing something as simple as a coaster.

The mindset never retires. It evolves. If you’re worried about “what’s next” after your business.

You’re asking the wrong question. The better one is:

“What problems am I still excited to solve?” Because purpose doesn’t end with an exit. It just finds a new outlet.

Sometimes the best part of stepping away from work… is the chance to simply be together.

This past week gave us time to slow down, share ideas, laugh a lot, and spend intentional time with the people we work alongside every day.

Yes, we talked about the future.
Yes, we had meaningful conversations about growth and where we’re headed.

But some of the most valuable moments happened in between all of that.

Around the dinner table.
In the conversations that weren’t planned.
In the moments where we could just enjoy being present together.

Grateful for this team and the culture we’re continuing to build.

Memorial Day always feels a little quieter than the other holidays.

It’s a day to pause and remember the people who gave their lives serving this country, and the families who carry that loss with them long after the ceremonies and flags are put away.

For a lot of us, the weekend will include cookouts, time with family, and a break from the usual pace of life. And that’s part of the point too. The ability to gather, build a life, run a business, raise a family, and plan for the future is something many people sacrificed greatly to protect.

That’s worth reflecting on.

Today is about gratitude and honoring. For the people who gave others the opportunity to keep building something meaningful here at home.

We’re remembering them today.

Champions think differently.

In this episode of The Art of Succession Podcast, host Barrett Young, CPA invites Albert Butler, CPA, MBA, Partner at a National CPA firm, to share a defining moment that transformed his mindset and the way he approaches life, business, and legacy.

Sometimes the lesson hits when you least expect it.

From the person you respect the most.

One sentence can shift everything. “I can’t.”

And suddenly you realise you never want to say that about yourself.

That moment becomes a decision.

A standard. A line you refuse to cross.

Because winning isn’t about talent.

It’s about how you show up every single day.

How you train. How you think.

How you respond when things get hard.

Freedom without purpose feels empty.

In this episode of The Art of Succession Podcast, host Barrett Young, CPA invites Albert Butler, CPA, MBA, Partner at a National CPA firm, to unpack the real journey behind choosing challenge over comfort and why that decision shapes everything.

Most people think freedom is the goal.

Less stress. Less work. More ease.

But what happens when you get it and feel nothing?

No challenge. No growth. No impact.

That’s when the truth hits.

You don’t just want comfort-you want purpose.

Because real fulfillment comes from solving problems that matter.

From helping real people.

From being stretched in ways that force you to grow.

Your business must stay balanced.

In this episode of The Art of Succession Podcast, host Barrett Young, CPA, invites Albert Butler, CPA, MBA, Partner at a National CPA firm, to explore leadership, legacy, and the deeper meaning behind accounting as the heartbeat of business.

Every decision you make flows through a system, whether you see it or not.

Your mind creates the vision. Your actions execute it.

The balance happens in the middle.

That’s where clarity lives.

That’s where problems reveal themselves.

And that’s where real leaders pay attention.

If something in your business feels off. It probably is.

And the numbers already told you.

Accounting isn’t just reporting, it’s awareness.

Your calendar controls your strategic impact.

In this episode of The Art of Succession Podcast, host Barrett Young, CPA invites Rebekah Olson, CPA, Chief Executive Officer of Maryland Association of CPAs - MACPA, to explore leadership, succession, and how to create space for strategic thinking.

Most leaders don’t lack vision. They lack time to think.

Calendars get filled with urgency.

Meetings take over every open space.

Strategy becomes an afterthought.

Real leadership requires protected time.

Time to step back and see the bigger picture.

Time to think beyond this week’s tasks.

Time to focus on long-term direction.

Blocking that time is not optional. It is a discipline that drives better decisions.

Without it, ex*****on replaces intentional leadership.
