Based upon many conversations with multiple clients there appears to be some confusion regarding some of the tax credits/changes in The One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
No. 1 confusion "No tax on social security" That is not correct. The OBBBA added an additional $6,000 standard deduction to individuals 65 and over. Single filers get $6000 if married and both over 65 get $12,000 additional standard deduction.
No. 2 confusion - "No tax on overtime" That is also not correct. This OBBBA tax credit reduces taxable income by the portion of overtime paid. Example - If an employee's normal hourly wage is $10 and overtime wage is $15, any overtime hours will get $5 per hour taxable income reduction. You will NOT get that $5 refunded to you.
These two items have been the most commonly misunderstood tax items for the 2025 tax filing season.
Hope this clears it up.
