The dramatic recession of 2008 was due, in large part, to unchecked greed. As long as greed continues to exist in the hearts and minds of individuals and corporations in positions of power in the financial markets, economic downturns will arise.

Looking to the past is a helpful tool in planning for the future. By now, the economy has largely recovered. So when the next downturn presents itself, reading this 2008 article from Jim will help to keep things in perspective: http://www.hallettadvisors.us/articlearchive/toto-were-not-in-kansas-anymore

One of the keys to financial wellness requires a determination to look beyond the important but unknowable factors that are commonly featured in day-to-day news headlines and to focus instead on what is important and knowable. By doing so we can make rational long-term financial planning decisions despite short-term uncertainties.

Creating sustainable retirement income portfolios is both an art and a science. Multiple uncertainties and assumptions will complicate the task. Individual investors (and their advisors) must balance portfolio stability and growth to meet future (or current) income needs. Investing itself requires a sort of "new math" to ensure the change from accumulation of wealth to distribution of wealth is handled smoothly.
