Trump's tax changes have already made positive impacts on most of my tax clients! It's nice to see the common citizen get some help.

After finishing day one of fall tax school, there's a few new developments you may want to be aware of as 2022 tax season approaches.

1. Child Tax Credit has been reduced back to only $2000 per qualifying child. This will certainly affect your refunds.

2. Child Tax Credit age-requirements has been reduced back to UNDER 17 at the end of 2022 rather than 18, like last year.

3. There will be a new Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit beginning in 2023 that could allow up to $1200 credit per year rather than the former $500 lifetime credit. You might consider holding off on new projects if you've already exhausted your current $500 lifetime credit.

4. Educator expenses deduction is increased to $300! Keep your receipts.

5. Annual gift tax limit is increasing to $17,000.

6. Virtual Currency is taxable and volatile. Bitcoin has fallen 70%. One day you can be a millionaire and then next day have lost everything. They are working at better ways of reporting these transactions and the IRS demands proper reporting.

7. Congress has committed $80B over 10 years to increase "enforcement" by the IRS and improve taxpayer compliance. They are serious about finding the oversights, inaccuracies, evasions to pay for all these credits and stimulus payments they have been offering. They need to generate tax revenue and they will be looking into you to help pay it. Be aware and careful.

The IRS has updated standard deductions and EIC income limits among other things for 2023 in light of our growing inflation.

IR-2022-182, October 18, 2022 — The Internal Revenue Service today announced the tax year 2023 annual inflation adjustments for more than 60 tax provisions, including the tax rate schedules and other tax changes. Revenue Procedure 2022-38 provides details about these annual adjustments.
