Should you work with a tax professional to file your taxes?

Working with a tax professional can be helpful if you’re unsure how to navigate tax software, have questions about eligibility for certain tax benefits or need guidance on more complex rules. A tax professional may also identify credits or deductions you qualify for but might otherwise overlook.

That guidance can be especially valuable as tax laws continue to change. Recent legislation, including the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), has introduced new provisions and planning considerations that aren’t always intuitive, such as expanded tip and overtime deductions, changes affecting certain credits and new rules tied to income thresholds.

Working with a tax professional can also be valuable when life changes affect a return, such as selling a home, getting married or divorced, changes in filing status, adding dependents or starting a business. In those situations, having an experienced tax professional involved can help ensure the return is prepared accurately and reflects the taxpayer’s full tax picture.

Under the guidance in IRS Notice 2025-69, a self-employed individual who receives income solely in cash or by check, but also receives tips, is not permitted to claim a tip deduction unless those tips are substantiated through third-party reporting. In the absence of a Form 1099-NEC or Form 1099-K reflecting the tipped amounts, the IRS considers the tips insufficiently documented for purposes of allowing a deduction, even if the taxpayer maintains internal records. Accordingly, without the required information reporting, no tip deduction is allowed.

What you need to bring for the Energy Efficient Credit.

New Changes to requirements for claiming the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit in 2025

Starting this year, the IRS is implementing a requirement for manufacturers to establish a PIN number for each eligible product, so it can be associated with the tax credit claim. Manufacturers are currently in the process of becoming “qualified manufacturers” or QMs. Because manufacturer registration is in process, it will be sufficient, for installations in 2025, to simply include the manufacturer’s four-digit QM code on your 2025 tax return. This applies to heat pumps (outdoor unit only), water heaters, CAC, boilers, furnaces, biomass stoves, windows, doors and skylights. (The QM code requirements applies for electric panel upgrades but will remain sufficient in future years.)

and Treasury are moving into a new era, and leaving relics of the past behind. This means we're saying goodbye to paper checks, and we're saying hello to electronic payment methods. Did you know that direct deposit refunds are less likely to get returned as undeliverable? And don’t forget, electronic tax payments are less likely to post late, helping you avoid penalties and interest.
