Tax Relief for Victims of Hurrican Ida in NY & NJ!
The IRS has provided tax relief to victims of Hurricane Ida in parts of New York and New Jersey. Individuals and businesses in the disaster area now have until January 3, 2022, to file various individual and business tax returns and to make tax payments.
In New York, the disaster area includes Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, Richmond, and Westchester counties.
In New Jersey, the disaster area includes Bergen, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Passaic, and Somerset counties.
The tax relief provides postpones to January 3, 2022, various tax filing and payment deadlines that occurred beginning on September 1, 2021 (the postponement period).
This means that individuals who have a valid extension to October 15, 2021, to file their 2020 return now have until January 3, 2022, to file their return. However, tax payments related to 2020 returns are not eligible for this relief because they were due on May 17, 2021.
It also means that the following deadlines are postponed, to January 3, 2022, the:
September 15, 2021, deadline for making quarterly estimated income tax payments
September 15, 2021, extended the deadline for calendar-year partnerships and S corporations to file their 2020 returns
October 15, 2021, extended the deadline for calendar-year C corporations to file their 2020 returns
November 1, 2021, deadline for quarterly payroll and excise tax returns
November 15, 2021, extended deadline for calendar-year tax-exempt organizations to file their 2020 returns
In addition, penalties and payroll and excise tax deposits due on or after September 1 and before September 16, 2021, will be abated if the deposits are made by September 16, 2021. The IRS automatically provides filing and penalty relief to any taxpayer with an IRS address of record located in the disaster area, so taxpayers do not need to contact the IRS to get this relief. However, if a taxpayer in the disaster area receives a late filing or late payment penalty notice from the IRS for a return or payment with a due date falling within the postponement period, they should call the number on the notice to have the penalty abated. In addition, taxpayers who live or have a business outside the disaster area, but whose tax records are in the disaster area, should contact the IRS at 866-562-5227.
