Daniel J. DeVerna - DeVerna & Co. Financial

Daniel J. DeVerna - DeVerna & Co. Financial Founding DeVerna & Co. Financial in Perrysburg, Ohio. Dan is a financial consultant, author and an accomplished martial artist. We exist to show people the way.

His career began in the late 90’s with New England Financial. In 2005, Dan and several partners formed Creative Financial Partners. They started CFP with the intention to have a client first philosophy & that has continued throughout the balance of his career. In 2021 he started his own agency, DeVerna & Co Financial. In rebranding the business, we really deliberated on the name & the purpose of o

ur business. We have really developed a system and a process for everything. Walking hundreds of people through retirement is our purpose. Most everyone retires one time, but I have the privilege of retiring hundreds of times. Dan notes, "We have the flexibility of building our business with clients' needs and wants due to the fact that we don't pledge alliance to any one company." Dan works primarily with hardworking people in the later stages of their careers to strengthen and help to protect their financial position while also supporting clients in reaching their financial goals. Dan has authored several books, Retirement is Just the Beginning, a series which focuses on union workers, medical professionals, railroad workers and first responders. He also co-authored Wanderlust A Guide to Destination Living. Dan also hosts a podcast where he enjoys engaging with guests to discuss an assortment of topics of interest. Often Dan is asked why he wrote the books and it’s an easy answer. Over the last 20+ years in this business, the amount of knowledge that has been accumulated is amazing. Putting all this information into a book to show people some of the strengths and weaknesses, along with pitfalls, was a great exercise that has helped many people. We have found many of our clients come back with great questions after looking through the books and they are also able to recognize that they are working with someone who has “been there before.” The Wanderlust book was really written just for fun and to help people brainstorm places to retire. It covers many of the areas of the country where our clients have retired to and the advantages and disadvantages of those different areas. Dan lives in Perrysburg, Ohio and has four children: Derek, Drake, Chloe and Brody. Martial arts has played a major role in Dan's life. Along with regular practice and teaching, Dan helped found MAAM (Martial Artists for the Advancement of Mindfulness) which is a non-profit 501 c(3) organization that helps enable young people to continue in martial arts. At this point, MAAM has given away thousands of scholarships to those who could not otherwise practice martial arts. Giving back to martial arts is a very meaningful part of Dan’s life as it has given him so much in the way of mental and physical health.

If you have a large amount of money sitting in a savings account, this is something you need to pay attention to.

Dan DeVerna, CFF explains why many banks are now paying extremely low interest on traditional savings accounts while better options may exist elsewhere. Most people assume their money is growing when in reality it could be barely working at all.

In this clip, Dan explains how brokerage-linked cash accounts and higher yielding money markets may offer better interest while still keeping your money accessible.

In this clip, Dan explains why Apple, Nvidia and Google tend to show up inside almost every mutual fund floating around in 401ks and IRAs. You might own the same stock seven different ways across seven different accounts and still believe your portfolio is diversified. Check the prospectus. Look at the top holdings. The answer might surprise you.

Owning a couple of individual stocks alongside a portfolio that is 90% mutual funds can look diversified on paper. Dan DeVerna, CFF says peel back the layers and it usually is not.

In this clip, Dan explains why this kind of setup often means you are owning the same stocks in multiple places without realizing it. It looks like diversification. It rarely is. And that hidden concentration quietly increases your risk.

If you have required minimum distributions and a charity you care about, there is a way to give that money directly and pay zero tax on it.

Dan DeVerna, CFF explains why this strategy is one of the most meaningful tools available for retirees who do not want to give the IRS any more than they already have to.

Owning 20 or 30 different holdings feels like diversification. Dan DeVerna, CFF says look closer at what is actually inside them.

In this clip, Dan explains why the Magnificent Seven stocks tend to show up across mutual funds, ETFs and individual holdings simultaneously. What looks like a diversified portfolio can actually be heavily concentrated in one or two names and that concentration dramatically increases your risk and volatility without you ever realizing it.

If retirement is 5 to 7 years away you still have time to be strategic about what happens to your retirement assets before the IRS gets involved.

In this clip, Dan DeVerna, CFF explains why at 73 required minimum distributions kick in and the amount you are forced to take has nothing to do with your advisor and everything to do with how much you have saved. The IRS sets the rules and the penalty for not following them is significant. The time to plan is now while you still have options.

If you have a SIMPLE IRA through your employer there may be a new option worth asking about.

In this clip, Dan DeVerna, CFF explains that some SIMPLE IRA plans are now adding a Roth IRA provision. That means you may have the ability to put after tax money into a Roth inside your existing employer plan. It is a new and very attractive addition that most employees have never heard about.

Wealthy people are not just thinking about rate of return. They are thinking about taxes, legacy and making sure not a dollar more than necessary goes to the IRS instead of the people they love.

In this clip, Dan DeVerna, CFF explains why this is a strategy conversation that deserves time and intention. The goal is to make sure your money gets all the way through retirement, protects your spouse, and lands where you actually want it to go. Slow down. Measure twice. Cut once.

If you own a business, choosing the right retirement plan can feel like a moving target. The good news? Your plan can—and should—flex based on the size of your company.

Here is how to look at it:
- Solo Operators: If you are your only employee, a SEP IRA is an absolute home run, giving you massive capacity to put away pretax dollars.

- Growing Teams: If you have employees and need a starter setup, a Simple IRA is a great, straightforward option.

- Established Businesses: A 401(k) is incredibly robust, giving you maximum flexibility and extra features as your company scales.

No matter how big your business gets, your retirement strategy needs a "measure twice, cut once" approach.
