From the desk of our Founder & CEO, Josh Waite:

“Tell me I can’t.” Those four words catch my attention every time I step into our workout room and look at the picture on the wall.

Words spoken by NBA legend, cultural icon, and my childhood hero – Michael Jordan. I was recently reminded of the significance of this quote as I sat on the couch to watch an episode of ESPN’s series, The Last Dance, with our son. A series that documented the Chicago Bulls’ 1998 season, the last season of their incredible run of six NBA championships in eight years. If you have watched the series, you might recall the storyline in Episode 8, in which it was well documented how Jordan would look for any edge to get his competitive juices flowing – a quote in the media, a random comment by an opposing player – and sometimes, a slight that he completely fabricated in his mind to get him fired up.

That imagined ‘challenge’ would flip a switch, get his competitive juices flowing, and push him to another level. And when Jordan went to another level – well, the results speak for themselves.

The idea of being ‘challenged’ was recently reinforced while I was listening to our pastor share a message about motivation. In it he talked about the difference between ‘convincing’ someone on the benefits of something versus ‘challenging’ them to rise to who they’re capable of becoming.

Convincing says, “Here’s why this will help you.” Challenging says, “I don’t think you’re capable of doing this.” And for certain people – people wired like Jordan – that ‘challenge’ hits deeper.

Last week, this concept came to life for me in one of the most unexpected places – the car wash. You know – the type where there is a lane for all the “members” and then there is a lane for “everyone else”. In case you are wondering, I am a part of “everyone else”.

As I pulled up to select my car wash package, the young lady taking my payment began explaining to me all the reasons why I should sign up for their monthly membership. She walked me through the math, how I’d “probably be back”, and why it would “make more sense financially” over time.

And while she was just doing her job, and was probably correct in her assumptions – I almost immediately felt myself tuning out. Something about her approach turned me off – and ultimately, I didn’t purchase the membership. Later that day I found myself wondering: “What if she had taken a different approach?”

What if, instead of giving me all the “features and benefits”, she had instead smiled and said something along the lines of, “Honestly, most people say they’ll come back, but they don’t. This membership is really only for people who are intentional about taking care of their car.”

Now that would have gotten my attention! And if she followed it up with the logical reasons why it made good sense, I think I would be a Club Car Wash member today.

What would have made the difference? Being ‘challenged’ versus being ‘convinced’. Jordan didn’t need someone to explain the upside – and neither did I. He needed someone, or at least to imaginesomeone, saying, “You don’t have what it takes.”

So here’s the question I’ve been sitting with this week: Where in your life are you trying to ‘convince’ yourself – when what you really need is a ‘challenge’?

Not a sales pitch. Not a list of benefits. But a line in the sand.

Tell me I can’t be more present with my family. Tell me I can’t break a bad habit. Tell me I can’t slow down. Tell me I can’t live with greater intention.

I believe for myself – and likely you as well – sometimes the fire we are waiting for isn’t sparked by encouragement – it is lit by resistance.

“Tell Me I Can’t”
intentional living call to action:
This week, identify one area of your life where you don’t need more convincing—you need a challenge. Write it down. Say it out loud if you have to. And then, like MJ, respond with action.

From the desk of our Founder and CEO, Josh Waite:

“Josh…you have no one to blame but yourself.”

The truth is hard to swallow when there is no one to blame but yourself – no excuse to give or person to point the finger at. This has been the conversation I have had with myself many times over the years – and was recently brought back to the front of my mind as I reviewed the past few weeks of my calendar.

Why was I reviewing my calendar? Simple – I felt like the pace I had been operating at was unsustainable. It was at that moment when the truth set in – I am the one who sets my schedule and determines my pace of life. No one does it to me – I do it to myself – and that reality is what makes it hard.

This recent reflection was amplified by Matthew Kelly in his book Slowing Down to the Speed of Joy. While grateful for the friend and client who recommended it, I was struck by a simple concept within the book that challenged me in a significant way.

Margin.

In his book Kelly writes, “When we reduce the busyness of our lives we create margin. Margin removes the need to be in a hurry. Margin allows us to handle interruptions masterfully like Jesus. Margin is what we’re missing.”

That word – margin – has been bouncing around in my mind ever since and was on the forefront as I stared at my calendar that day. Ironically, or maybe providentially, Kelly’s book and the word ‘margin’ aligns perfectly with my ‘one word’ for 2026 – Slow.

As I have shared in the past, at the beginning of each year, I spend time praying and reflecting on the word which I believe God is trying to develop within me during the coming season. This year, the word that kept resurfacing was “slow”.

Not lazy. Not complacent. Not lacking ambition.

Slow enough to notice. Slow enough to listen. Slow enough to be present. Slow enough to love people well.

As I read Kelly’s book and reflected on the idea of ‘margin’, I couldn’t help but feel that this was another example of how God was using my one word to shape me in 2026.

What resonated with me was the concept of ‘margin’ – in a fresh way I had never contemplated before. The reality is, I have worked hard over the years to create margin – financially. And while I am grateful for that margin as it has allowed both our family and business to step into opportunities to be generous — e.g., to give, to help, and to support causes and people we care deeply about. But Kelly’s words challenged me to ask a new question:

Have I created enough ‘time margin’ to be generous relationally?

If I’m honest… too often the answer is no. My schedule has often been efficient, productive, and full. But maybe that’s part of the problem. Kelly writes, “Busy distracts us from what matters most. It deceives us into thinking activity and productivity are the same thing.”

That line hit me hard. When there’s no margin in my day, interruptions begin to feel like inconveniences instead of opportunities. A phone call feels disruptive. A conversation feels rushed. Someone needing help feels like they are throwing off the schedule. And the truth is – that is not generosity. That is greed with my time.

One of the most convincing lines in the book says, “Without this margin we will see every interruption as an annoyance.”

Isn’t that true? The problem often isn’t the interruption itself – the problem results from our not leaving space for it. As I thought about this, I couldn’t help but reflect on the life of Jesus. Arguably (in my opinion) the most impactful person to walk the face of the earth – yet Jesus was never in a hurry.

People interrupted Him constantly and crowds pressed in regularly. Individuals stopped Him along the road, and yet many of those interruptions became His ministry. In his book, Kelly pushes the reader to consider these questions:

How do we respond when our plans get interrupted? Do we respond with frustration – or with presence?

He goes on to state this about himself, “Love is the mandate of my God. The speed of my life was incongruent with love, and the busyness of my life was incompatible with love.”

That last line may be the one I needed to hear most, because I too often would say that same about my life. I need to reminder that the end of the day, generosity is not just about money. It’s about availability. And maybe one of the greatest truths hidden inside the idea of margin is found in Kelly’s simple statement:

Our greatest ability is our availability.

intentional living call to action:
Build margin into your calendar this week, month, and year. Leave space to slow down, to be interruptible, and to be generous with your time when the opportunity arises.
