Our philosophy

Sales - When it comes to sales I look at how we can serve and help, not what we can monetize. In many cases we are lucky to break even the first year.

We are looking for lifetime clients not transactional transitional relationships. We want to partner with our clients to ensure a win-win.

Value is in the eye of the beholder. I want people to buy from us not to be sold by us.

Customer Service - We have a tagline. “Walking in your shoes, looking through your eyes, living in your world “
Walking alongside you helps us understand what you do and where we can assist.

Looking through your eyes allows us to understand why you do what you do.

Understanding your point of view gives us the ability to support you at a greater level.

Living in your world simply is our goal. When we understand what we can do to make your life better, supporting your vision that’s when we thrive. Every business owner needs a trusted partner, friend, person in those non-revenue generating activities.

Services - we can integrate all business responsibilities and mandates into one tracking report.
Example; doing your payroll allows us to take all expense employees create from hard cost to soft cost and provide you with a true cost per hour for labor.

Our services include but are not limited to payroll, timekeeping, benefits, retirement, safety compliance, risk management- E-learning, audits and compliance. We save you time and give you peace of mind!

What can be measured can be improved. We focus on being proactive to your needs as we see patterns overtime. We believe that no situation is greater than the relationship.

SCAM ALERT: Fake Police Calls About Missed Court Dates for COVID Funds

We’ve been made aware of a scam where people are receiving phone calls from someone pretending to be law enforcement. They claim you missed a court date related to COVID relief funds and threaten arrest if you don’t pay a fine or fee immediately.

This is 100% a scam.

Real police will NEVER:
• Call you demanding payment over the phone
• Threaten arrest for missing a court date without official paperwork
• Ask for payment via gift cards, wire transfers, or apps like CashApp

If you get a call like this:
1. Hang up
2. Do NOT give them any personal information
3. Report it to your local police department or the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov

Stay alert, and please share this to protect others!

Fun fact: The first known paycheck in the United States was issued in 1870. Before that, many workers were paid in goods or trade instead of cash. Imagine trying to pay rent with a bag of flour.

Overtime 101: What You Need to Know

Overtime is a key part of wage laws, and understanding it can help both employers and employees stay compliant and avoid payroll issues.

What Counts as Overtime?
In most cases, overtime applies when an employee works more than 40 hours in a workweek. When that happens, they must be paid at a rate of time and a half for those extra hours.

Who Qualifies for Overtime?
Not all employees are entitled to overtime pay. Non-exempt employees, typically those paid hourly, qualify. Exempt employees, usually salaried workers who meet specific job duty and salary requirements, do not.

Can Employers Require Overtime?
Yes, as long as it complies with labor laws. Some states have additional regulations, such as requiring overtime pay for working more than a set number of hours in a single day.

What About Unauthorized Overtime?
Even if an employee was not approved to work overtime, they must still be paid for any extra hours worked. However, employers can enforce policies to limit unauthorized overtime.

Overtime laws can be complex, but understanding the basics helps ensure compliance and fair compensation. If you have questions, let’s discuss.

𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝘆 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗱

A pay period is the length of time during which employees work and then receive a paycheck. The schedule you choose can have a big impact on both your employees’ cash flow and your internal processes. Here’s a quick rundown of four common pay schedules:

𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗹𝘆 (𝟱𝟮 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿)
Pros: Consistent, frequent paychecks can help employees manage weekly expenses.
Cons: Tight turnaround between paydays can be challenging for employers.

𝗕𝗶𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗹𝘆 (𝟮𝟲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿)
Pros: Employees still receive regular pay, making it easier to plan and budget.
Cons: Some months may include three paychecks, which can affect long-term budgeting.

𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗶-𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗹𝘆 (𝟮𝟰 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿)
Pros: Set pay dates align smoothly with monthly bills, simplifying personal finances for many employees.
Cons: Calculating overtime can be tricky if a pay period ends in the middle of a workweek.

𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗹𝘆 (𝟭𝟮 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿)
Pros: One paycheck a month can help align income with larger monthly expenses.
Cons: Employees wait longer between paydays, so they may need strong budgeting skills.

Gross vs. Net Pay — What’s the Difference?

Ever look at your paycheck and wonder where your money went? Here’s the scoop:

Gross Pay: Your total earnings before any deductions (taxes, benefits, etc.).
Net Pay: The “take-home” amount after all those deductions.

At Shepherd Payroll in Pensacola, Florida, we make sure your employees (and you!) see the numbers clearly every payday. Understanding these basics can help with budgeting and financial planning—so you’re never caught off guard by the difference between your “on-paper” pay and what actually lands in your bank account.
