Clean up or catch up. What is the actual difference? 💼

Clean up bookkeeping fixes books that are disorganized, miscategorized, or inconsistent.

Catch up bookkeeping brings books current when they have simply fallen behind, sometimes by months.

Knowing which one your business needs is the first step to fixing it instead of guessing at a solution.

S corporation owners, have you reviewed your salary this year? 💼

Before the year ends, ask yourself:

Have your business profits increased significantly this year?
Are you taking substantial distributions while receiving a relatively small paycheck?
Has your role, workload, or responsibilities grown since your salary was set?

If you answered yes to any of these, it may be time to take a closer look. Your pay should reflect the work you actually do in your business, and the best time to review it is before December, not after the year is already closed.

Not sure where you stand? Talk it through with your tax professional, or send us a message and we will help you get your books ready for that conversation. 👇

Revenue alone does not tell you how your business is really doing. 💼

Here are the numbers every small business owner should be tracking:

Revenue. How much money is coming in? Look for patterns in your strongest months and your top earning products or services.

Net profit. Revenue is what you earn. Profit is what is left after expenses. If sales are growing but profit is not, take a closer look at your expenses.

Cash flow. This is the cash actually moving in and out of your business. Unpaid invoices are not available to pay this week's bills until you collect them.

Profit margin. How much of each dollar you are actually keeping. $100,000 in revenue with $20,000 in profit is a 20% net profit margin.

Accounts receivable. How much customers owe you and how long invoices have been outstanding. Review your aging report regularly and follow up on anything overdue.

Your reports are only useful when your bookkeeping is accurate and up to date.

Which one of these do you check least often? Drop it below, or send us a message if you need help getting your books current. 👇

A practical year end checklist for business owners who want to close the year with clarity. 📋

Get bookkeeping caught up. Confirm all income and expenses are recorded, and resolve missing transactions, uncategorized expenses, and aging items.

Reconcile your accounts. Match your accounting software to your bank, credit card, loan, and payment processor statements.

Follow up on unpaid invoices. Use an accounts receivable aging report to prioritize invoices that are 30, 60, or 90 plus days overdue.

Review your financial reports. Examine your year to date Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow Statement, receivables, payables, and Budget vs Actual.

Start planning for next year. Build realistic revenue goals, budgets, and targets from this year's actual performance.

Check in with your tax professional. Planning happens before year end, so do not leave it as a January task.

Get ready for 1099 season. Collect completed W-9s and verify payment totals now to avoid delays or penalties.

Businesses that work through this list early enter the new year with accurate books and confident decisions. 📊

If your books are behind, we can help you get caught up, cleaned up, and ready for year end.

Should I start my business before year end or wait until 2027? 💼

If you are ready, starting now helps you build momentum and start tracking 2026 business expenses right away.

What if I wait until January? Depending on your business structure, waiting could simplify your bookkeeping and tax reporting by starting fresh in 2027.

There is no universally right answer. It depends on your specific situation.
