A rollover decision can change when you are able to use your retirement money.

If you separate from service during or after the calendar year you turn 55, withdrawals from that employer’s 401(k) may qualify for an exception to the 10% additional tax on early distributions. Ordinary income tax can still apply, and the plan must permit the withdrawal.

That age-55 exception generally does not follow the money into an IRA.

An IRA may offer advantages of its own. The decision should be measured against the income you may need before age 59½, not treated as automatic paperwork after retirement.

The Federal Reserve’s latest rate hike reflects a familiar challenge: monetary policy can respond to inflation, but it cannot directly address the underlying forces driving it.

Reaching the annual 401(k) limit early can create an unexpected problem.

Some employers calculate their match one paycheck at a time. If you hit the contribution limit before the final payroll of the year, your later paychecks may have no employee contribution for the employer to match.

A year-end true-up can restore the difference. Not every plan offers one.

Before front-loading contributions or increasing your payroll percentage, ask the plan administrator three questions:

• Is the match calculated per paycheck or across the full year?
• Does the plan provide a true-up contribution?
• Must I be employed on a certain date to receive it?

The 2026 employee contribution limit is $24,500 before any eligible catch-up contribution. How you reach that number can matter as much as the number itself.
