The scammers are still out there in force calling people and claiming they are IRS agents. They will tell you you owe a ton of money and must settle now or go to jail. If you receive a phone call from 480-944-1000 it is FRAUD. If you receive these kinds of phone calls, go to https://www.irs.gov/privacy-disclosure/report-phishing and see the options for reporting various IRS scams. You can also e-mail [email protected] and let them know you received a phone call and provide them with the number. The IRS is serious about going after these people. You will never get a phone call out of the blue from the IRS.

Although the 2020 tax filing year is still in progress (contrary to what most people believe, it does not end on April 15) tax professionals are already thinking about the 2021 season to come and hoping it won't be as volatile as the last two years have been. Unfortunately, that won't be the case - new administration, new tax laws, new tax rates - again - COVID effects . . .

If you have noticed an uptick in IRS notices being received more and more each year, you might wish to review the following articles which explains that with Automated Underreporting program (AUR) only a computer is processing the tax documents and matching them with taxpayer tax returns. While this program has reduced the number of human audits that are actually conducted, the result is that if the computer cannot match the underlying tax documents reported by the taxpayer to the individual documents received from the various employers, banks, etc., a computer-generated notice is kicked out and these notices have multiplied tremendously over the years as technology becomes more and more imbedded in the system. These notices are not "audits" they are notices requesting more information. While this information may not ease your mind entirely, I hope it will help people understand that these are not random audits, but a cross-checking process to ensure that taxpayers have accounted for all of their sources of income and expenses.

Taxpayers think there is an audit lottery. Tax professionals know better. True, there is an audit lottery in the sense that only a very, very small percentage of returns are subject to human scrutiny. But what most taxpayers overlook is that the IRS relies heavily on machines to process returns...
