Estate planning…Business succession…Retirement income…Long-term care…Generational wealth. These aren't always the most exciting conversations. 🥱 But they're important conversations.

And they're a lot easier to have when you're planning ahead instead of responding to a situation that's already here.

October is a good reminder that the end of the year will be here before we know it.

If there are financial conversations you've been putting off, now might be a good time to start them.

Retirement isn't just about reaching your number.

We talk a lot about the “magic number” for retirement, but reaching a certain account balance is only part of the equation.

What happens after you get there?
How much income will you need?
Which accounts should you draw from first?
How will taxes affect your income?
What happens when the market has a bad year?
How will healthcare costs factor in?
And how do you make sure your money lasts as long as you do?

Retirement planning eventually shifts from “How much do I need to save?” to “How do I turn what I've built into a sustainable lifestyle?” That transition deserves just as much planning as the accumulation years.

September CPI released last week, making this a natural opportunity to talk about why inflation matters beyond the headline number.

Inflation isn't just an economic statistic. It shows up in the price of groceries, travel, insurance, healthcare, housing and just about everything else that makes up your day-to-day life.

And when you’re planning for retirement, it matters even more. A retirement plan isn't simply about asking, “How much do I have today?” It’s about asking:

“What will my money need to provide 10, 20 or even 30 years from now?”

That’s why sustainable retirement planning has to account for more than today’s expenses. Inflation, taxes, longevity and the timing of income all matter when you're designing a plan meant to support your lifestyle for decades.

What if the biggest value of financial planning isn't having all the answers?

What if it's having someone who knows which questions to ask? What happens if you sell the business earlier than expected? What happens if you don't? What would your family need if something happened to you?
What does your wealth need to accomplish beyond your lifetime?

Good planning isn't just about spreadsheets and projections. It's about looking at your financial life from different angles and finding the questions that deserve a closer look.

Recently, the ECHL, a minor professional hockey league based in New Jersey and one of our clients, hosted their preseason meetings for the board of governors down in Arlington Texas, in Globe Life Field, the home of the Texas Rangers. We had the honor of sponsoring a suite for a game that included the Rangers vs. NY Mets.

It was a great evening of sports, feasting, and bonding. If you haven't been to Globe Life Field, we highly recommend it!

The Fed met September 15–16, with another meeting scheduled for October 27–28.*

You’ll probably hear a lot about the Federal Reserve this fall.
Rates. Inflation. Cuts. Hikes. “What the Fed might do next.” But what does all of that actually mean for you?

The answer depends on where you are in your financial life.

Interest rates can affect borrowing costs, cash savings, bonds, business decisions and other parts of your financial picture. But the right response isn't automatically “change the portfolio.”

It starts with asking a better question: Has anything actually changed about your goals?

If the answer is no, a change in the headlines doesn't necessarily mean a change in the plan.

We can’t control every variable. Between families growing, businesses (or careers) changing, and markets moving, it’s impossible to predict everything.

But the goal of financial planning isn't to predict every twist and turn; it’s to build a framework that can adapt when life does.

That’s why we revisit plans, ask questions, challenge assumptions and make adjustments when they’re actually warranted.

Planning isn’t about knowing exactly what will happen. It’s about being prepared for what might.

Here's something you may not expect from a financial planning firm:
We don't believe every financial decision needs an immediate answer. 😱

Sometimes the best thing we can do is slow down. This means looking at the options, talking through the tradeoffs, and asking more questions. THEN decide.

Our planning process is designed around understanding your vision, values, goals, and objectives before jumping into solutions. We review alternatives, model different scenarios, and then prioritize what actually makes sense for you.

Because financial planning isn't supposed to be about making the most decisions. It's about making BETTER decisions.

Not every financial decision needs to be made today. Sometimes the best thing you can do is take a step back, look at the whole picture and ask:
Is this actually a problem that needs solving right now? Or are we reacting to a headline, a market move, or someone else’s idea of what we should be doing?

Good planning creates space for perspective. And sometimes, that perspective is exactly what you need before making your next move.

Your business may be your biggest asset. But is it actually part of your financial plan?

For many business owners, the answer is complicated. Your business can represent years of work, personal sacrifice, growth, and a significant portion of your net worth.

This means eventually you have to answer some difficult questions:
☞What is the business worth?
☞What happens if you want to sell?
☞Who could take over?
☞What happens if something unexpected happens to you?
☞And perhaps most importantly: How does your business exit strategy fit into the life you want after the business?

Business planning and personal financial planning shouldn't exist in separate worlds.

At WBD, we look at how the pieces fit together.
If you've built something valuable, let's make sure your plan accounts for it.
